Surname is a noun - this is much harder than I thought!!

During the course of our baby name conversations, I've realised just how bloody difficult it is to pair our surname with any of the names I've been adding to my list.

Our surname is a Lamb. Difficult enough being a noun, and having that pastoral connection, but so many of my previously chosen names just don't work.

Serena Lamb - "serene lamb" sounds like a description of a really chilled out farm animal

Lila - too many 'L' sounds

Elinor "Elin" - same

Cillian - saaaaame why do so many of my fave names have Ls in them?!

Christian - lamb of God... christian... too on the nose

Joshua - SAME because Joshua literally means Jesus

See also: Maria (also brings to mind "Mary had a little lamb")

Roisin Lamb - sounds too much like roast lamb and I can't unhear it!!

Caitriona - would inevitably be shortened to Cat Lamb (also C.Lamb = clam, but I may be overthinking at this point)

Ophelia Lamb - sounds like you're feeling up a lamb

Freya Lamb - and now you're frying the lamb. (F.Lamb also looks a bit like Flambé 😂)

Francesca (girl) or Fran (boy) - Fran Lamb just sounds dreadful.

I've jokingly suggested we all switch to my maiden name instead because his name is making this unnecessarily hard!

A few of my faves that do work have been used by friends, family members, and ex-boyfriends (I mean, how very dare they) so I can't really use them now.

Any advice from those of you who also have awkward surnames?

It's getting to the point where I might have to go with something really plain and traditional, but I don't want to use a name I don't love just to play it safe. Husband has very few suggestions of his own which doesn't help!

Charles Lamb

("the essayist Charles Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature")

I would definitely lean into flambé. What a great nickname!

I think you need a name with a hard ending or of at least two syllables, preferably both. Florence springs to mind but is really popular.

And maybe steer clear of Anne and Cillian.

There's nothing wrong with the surname, @floopyboop , the sounds and meaning are pleasant. It just means you need to be cautious with choosing a name.
I'd not be using Rose or May as a middle name. Roast lamb/about to have a baby sheep.

luckylavender · 19/09/2026 15:59

I also have a similarly difficult surname. Other names to avoid Henrietta Lamb, Ivor Lamb, Larry Lamb and Manon Lamb.

Amandaland 😂

Seriously, I'm glad so many people have said I'm overthinking it. I am a chronic overthinker, so this tracks.

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised that other people actually quite like our surname - I can't say I was thrilled with it when we got married, but it's always been important to me to share the same name as my husband and children so it was never an option to go with anything else really.

It was always an option to share your name. Just FYI.

The best yet. Middle name Rose. Perfect for an Easter baby.

Isn't that the name of one of Nicole Kidman's daughters? Sunday Rose? Lovely name, but yes... I think I'll avoid that 😂

I think you’re massively overthinking it. Nobody else is going to think about it.

Yeah right.

Lins77 · 19/09/2026 10:44

However, I wouldn't go for Autumn Lamb!

My advice would be to avails any name beginning with the letter A.
Avoid certain memes beginning with the letter L, unless there are several syllables.

I think Euan is out, more sheep references - Ewe 'n' Lamb

Cillian maybe not, that could end up Killin a Lamb

BrandiedAromatics · 18/09/2026 21:57

Best not to have another noun, so when I saw Is-a-bell-a-Lamb? I thought no, it's a bell!

also Ewan and Iwan. Ramon/Ramona/Honor/Suki?

Joshua Lamb, Cillian Lamb, Roisin Lamb and Maria Lamb are absolutely fine.

Agree with avoiding rhyme (Fran Lamb). And Christian Lamb isn't great (but Christopher would be fine). But otherwise I'd say most names go with it fine. A random selection of different style names that all work:

Alexander
Matthew
Oliver
Hector
Euan
Magnus
Ralph
Freddie

Astrid
Harriet
Annie
Greta
Iris
Juniper
Chloe
Ava

Honestly OP don't worry about the few names you can't use, there are loads that you can. Just not Iona Lamb 😂

I've seen it written, and heard Ro-shene. But not linked the two together.

Roisin I'd have split Rois-in
The 'Rois' giving me Ros
The 'in' bit giving you lin/lyn.

A good reason not to use Irish and Welsh names outside those countries.

Ps for the avoidance of doubt I am dyslexic which might not be helping

Edited

Ah! Thanks. I think Welsh and Irish names don't sound as nice in English accents. Same goes for names from other languages.

Cocolist · 18/09/2026 20:17

Serena Lamb is lovely. Don’t over think the name you choose, Just go for what you love.

HugoThatway · 18/09/2026 18:57

And Roisin is not pronounced Roslyn. What made you think it was Roslyn?

Newname26 · 18/09/2026 17:50

floopyboop · 16/09/2026 13:00

ROW-sheen (like row your boat)

My family is Irish and it's one of my favourites, plus it's one of the few Irish names not already taken by one of my cousins.

Edited

😳 I learned 30sec ago that RowSheen and Roisin are the same name.
And Roisin is not pronounced Roslyn. Whoops a daisy 😬

Lamb is a great name.
But your right some names don't work with it Fraya definitely looks like frying to me.

I'm sure I was in school with an Andrew Lamb

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/09/2026 17:46

I think longer names work for girls
Gabriella Lamb
Isabella Lamb
Evangeline Lamb
Beatrix Lamb

Boys
Sebastian Lamb
Montgomery (Monty) Lamb
Gabriel Lamb (Gabe)
Zachariah Lamb (Zach Lamb sounds like a cool hippy musician am- great vibe!)

SunshineSpice · 18/09/2026 17:42

Some I think are fine but Ophelia Lamb with your description made me lol.

Harriet, Matilda, Penelope

George, James, Thomas
