Thoughts on the name Agatha and nickname Aggie?

Thoughts on the name Agatha, middle name Jean, with a double-barrelled surname?

I really like Agatha, and we’d probably use Aggie as a nickname. I know it’s quite a divisive name, so interested to hear what people think…

One thing I’m unsure about is whether people associate “Aggie/aggy” with “aggressive” or being irritable? I’m not from the UK so I’m not sure if this is actually a thing people would notice?

Would love honest thoughts.

There are much nicer , more feminine names than Agatha, also Aggie is awful ! .
Annalise is much nicer in my opinion, shortened to Anna which is pretty & classy .

Awful, so is Jean unless the baby is 85 years. Just why?

I love it and almost used it. Went for Dora instead. Aggy Im not sure about, I might try and come up with a different one like Gattie?

Love them both. My 16yo DD has a name I'd consider similar. She likes her name .

I really like Agatha and Aggie even though I do use “aggy” to mean aggressive or argumentative. I think of the baby from Nanny McPhee before I think of old lady or Christie but I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to use it knowing it’s very marmite.

Aggie meant frumpy or old fashioned in our neck of the woods.
Apart from that, Agatha with a full G is a very hard sound.
Agnès if pronounced the French way, I.e. with the hard G sounding more like an enye (ñ) like in señor, is much softer.

I’m sorry but I really dislike it. Very hard sounding with the emphasis on the AG-atha (AG ugh thuh)

Funnily enough I much prefer the French/German version. I think because it has the emphasis on the middle syllable which is longer ie a-GAHT-uh (the h is not pronounced).

If you are not English then please do consider whether you like the English pronunciation.

I often use “aggy” as someone who is angry or aggressive. Perhaps weekly if not daily. Born in London for context. I would think it was a bit strange to hear someone with that name. Also a bit dated as a reference but my other thought would be “Kim and Aggy” on TV. I do like Agatha though so it’s tricky!

Living in the UK I'd associate "Aggie" with someone being aggy or aggressive I'm afraid!

To me it’s like a stereotype of the ugliest possible name you can imagine. Sorry. (Agnes, OTOH, is sweet!)

I have an Agatha! She is definitely not an Aggie, when she was little we called her Agga.

I have a name that was considered old fashioned and awful in the 70s which has been in the top 10 the last few years. Fashions change.

Lots of people hate it, but then I also think lots of other peoples names are awful, I had a family member complain, I think her children’s names are common and dull, I don’t say it though,

I think an Agatha could be quite an interesting character OP - maybe quite bookish. Or sporty. But a bit off-beat.

I still like Augusta as an alternative though!

The thing with names is they are so subjective. I personally think Agatha and Jean are two of the ugliest names out there (and no nick name saves them either). My opinion, I appreciate others will love them.

Awful, awful, awful. Ugly name, ugly nickname, ugly middle name. Don’t do this to the poor child when there are so many actually nice names out there..

Taggie, Tag and Agga are even worse than Aggie and that takes some doing.
