Asher Smith

Love the name Asher, but my surname is Smith. Would you think of the sprinter Dina Asher-Smith...? (And if so, is that a bad thing?)

I’ve never heard of the athlete (not my thing!) but it does sound like a surname to me.

I couldn’t work out why the name sounded familiar! Yes, I know of Dina Asher-Smith, but certainly wouldn’t rule out the name because of that.

No one was suggesting calling a girl Asher.

Asher is a boys name to me.
And a character in the book - My Name Is Asher Lev.

For a girl I would use Asha or Ayesha.

Never heard of the sprinter but I do know an Asher Smith. I don’t think I could name any sprinters other than Usain Bolt tbh!

I wouldn't think of the sprinter, but anticipating a shortening to Ash (at school etc, even if you prefer to always use full name) Ash Smith is a bit of a lispy sound.

I did instantly think of Dina, I think she’s fairly well known outside of athletics diehards (I don’t have a particular interest but still know her name, Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford, etc. just like Colin Jackson, Paula Radcliffe, Liz McColgan and so on)

But I doubt your son’s generation will have her as a household name in the same way and she’s a positive figure so I don’t see much of an issue!

Asher was on my short list- i love the name. I think its great with Smith as you need something a bit less common to balance out a common surname.

Never heard of the Sprinter, but my friend is a Smith and shares his name with a shop, I think you'll hit a lot of namesakes in any direction you go.

Well I would, because I watch athletics. But also that wouldn't be a bad thing at all, it would be a passing thought and I might wonder if you were an athletics fan, but that's about it. Dina Asher-Smith (to date) seems like a nice person and has not had any controversy whatsoever in her career. If you were suggesting Ben Johnson then that might be a different matter!

I have never heard of that sprinter so I have no idea how well known she is.
I doubt many people would think that unless you are heavily involved with athletics.
