Torn between Elsie and Elektra for our baby girl

First time parents, Two very different names but these are our top two and I feel so torn. Elsie feels very cutesy and girly, Elektra feels bold. Sounds silly but it feels like a decision that will have a huge bearing on who she becomes. Elsie is a family name but worried it is very popular. Elektra i just worry could be too bold. Also if it was Elektra I envision it with a ‘k’ not a ‘c’ but is that also too bold?

Exactly 💯

It is horrendous what has happened to the name Karen. Pure misogyny

DJKATIE · 30/08/2026 20:55

I am so sorry but Electa however it is spelt is awful

Cherrytree86 · 30/08/2026 20:56

It's a tricky one because normally when parents are deciding between 2 names they are usual of a similar vibe but your top 2 are so completely different.

I prefer Elsie and I wouldn't worry about it being mega common now yes it's gained in popularity over the past few years but I wouldn't say it's common.

You could change the spelling. Elsey Elsea or Ellsie just to make it slightly different but still with a respectful nod to your Nan.

Good God. Don't do that with the spellings. She'll spend her whole life spelling her name and they are awful made up words in reality.

Elektra! 😂

Shes not a cartoon character.

This
it’s absolutely bloody awful
Elsie however is a lovely name

mathanxiety · 30/08/2026 21:10

Please not Elsie!

But not Elektra (or Electra) either.

Would you consider -
Elfrieda
Elvira
Eliska
Elena
Elspeth
Eleanora

Elsie. Definitely not Elektra!

welshgirl2025 · 01/09/2026 10:09

Elektra/electra. sounds like an electrical appliance and she would go through her whole life being asked is that with a "c" or a "k". Elsie is a beautiful name

APinkPosey · 01/09/2026 10:26

I love Electra! What a cool name. Much prefer it with a C though. I also like a PP suggestion of Elettra, makes it a bit softer which might make it easier to carry off depending on her personality.

Elsie is fine, cute and well known, but it's rather dull, especially when compared to Electra!

Passenger42 · 03/09/2026 05:45

How about Eleri which is Welsh and is pronounced eh-LEH-ree.

paristotokyo · 03/09/2026 05:50

I knew an adult Elektra. She was really zany, funny but sweet. She was cool!

Maisydaisy56 · 03/09/2026 06:00

Def not Elektra! Elsie is a lovely name and very popular now

mellongoose · 03/09/2026 06:11

Electra is a stripper. So is Elektra. Sorry.

Electra is a stripper. So is Elektra. Sorry.

I was a stripper for almost 20 years and never met an Elektra (with any variation on the spelling)! They tend to use quite 'normal' names. I never met an Elsie either, mind.

Hoork · 03/09/2026 12:20

I’m so surprised at the negative comments towards elektra! I knew a little girl called elektra she was bold, bright and spunky and I thought the name was amazing (they were Greek). Elsie is nice but so many kids are called Elsie now.
I knew quite a few girls called Elsa, it’s a good mix of the strength of the name Elektra and the sound of the name Elsie.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 03/09/2026 12:33

Elektra is really not good. It sounds way too much like a comic-book character. Elsie is a strong name! You must have heard of Elsie Tanner from Coronation Street? She was a fiery, forthright character.

I’d go with Elsie to honour your Nan and keep the spelling as it is! Creating a ‘unique’ way of spelling Elsie just looks silly.

Good grief, you can’t name a human child Elektra / Electra. It’s ridiculous. Get goldfish if you want to mess about with stupid names. Or stick to naming stuffed toys.

I know a few Electras but they are all spelt with c not k.

It's a bit of an attention-seeking name imo.

TheSunIsAlwaysThere · 30/08/2026 20:57

Good God. Don't do that with the spellings. She'll spend her whole life spelling her name and they are awful made up words in reality.

And Elsea looks like a brand name for seasickness medication.

Calliopespa · 04/09/2026 14:59

Elsbeth, Elsie for short?

Balloonhearts · 04/09/2026 15:04

Wasn't that a character from Ace Lightning? Please do not saddle your poor daughter with the name Elektra

seahorsessky · 04/09/2026 15:13

Freud's been mentioned a lot, so ignoring that for now. Elsie and Elsa have been very popular for a decade or two now. Eliza went from being a name associated with someone learning how to talk to being suddenly popular right now, like Eloise, but if you don't mind that, why not. They're nice names.
