I love the name, but DP isn't sure. I think Merry is cute for a girl while Meredith is more grown up, and good for stern telling off's .

yes or no?

ps. My RL name is common as muck and it drives me mad so I am trying to find less common names for my DC's.

I know a lovely Meredith (merry)
love it!!!!

meglet · 27/06/2008 22:36

dragon that's too intelligent for me late on a friday night . I knew it had welsh roots though.

I have just texted DP (who is at the pub and therefore easily swayed) and informed him that DD will be Meredith because MN said so, and he's ok with it!

I always think of it as MerEdith too, and as a surname or boy's name, really. Its Welsh, and means 'leader', I believe. There is a lot of crossover of Christian/Surnames on this side of Offa's Dyke. All to do with the Patronymic naming system (look it up on Google!)

bluenosesaint · 27/06/2008 22:15

I love it! and love the nn Meri too

BigBadMousey · 27/06/2008 22:14

love it.

fishie · 27/06/2008 22:14

i have just realised that my ds name is related and that is why i liked it (dh proposed it).

meglet we had rules so no religious names and no foreign names (we are english). this included all french ones so farewell most names.

MrsSprat · 27/06/2008 22:11

Be careful if you live in London/essex/herts, it will be Merediff.

It's alright, it's a bit, urm, stiff. I think its the -ith which is a bit 'edithy'

meglet · 27/06/2008 22:09

actually it was the surname of my first years techer at junior school. She was very nice. I've heard it as first name and surname.

so i think its a lovely name

fishie · 27/06/2008 22:08

is it a surname? i always assumed was the prigin of edith

dizzydixies · 27/06/2008 22:07

dizzydixies · 27/06/2008 22:04

so would I meglet its lovely

thats what I mean, if you're happy enough to yell it then you're happy enough to use it

I've had a few thoughts and added it on to calling the girls in the park/tesco etc and thought - nope couldn't use it and moved on to another suggestion

not meant as judgy, just an example of how I narrow down choices

fishie · 27/06/2008 22:02

but surely if you give your child a name you are happy to yell it whereever?

preserving dignity at all times of course.

meglet · 27/06/2008 22:01

I would be happy to yell it in tescos .

dizzydixies · 27/06/2008 21:58

I think its lovely to have diversity and according to the mumsnet 'judges' I have so far given my kids a common name and a chav name so I personally don't really care what people think of what others think of my choice BUT if you're too embarassed to shout a name in Tesco then you're hardly likely to want to use it for everyday

call me judgy if you like, it wasn't meant to be

fishie · 27/06/2008 21:55

dizzy don't you think it is nice to have diversity? i don't know where you live of cousre, but it does sound rather judgy.

dizzydixies · 27/06/2008 21:51

Tesco challenge - shout it up the mile aisle in tesco and if people look at you funny then its a no no for me lol

meridith is just fine for that

wotnopulling · 27/06/2008 21:49

i think it is lovely.

a friend of mine says how to test a name is to try it out with these three sentences

'can xxx come out to play'
'i think xxx is ready for her next promotion'
and
'i love you xxx'

CilC · 27/06/2008 21:47

I really really like it! Was on my list! Don't worry about Grays Anatomy link...no one will know in a few years (and I am not necessarily saying that is why you have chosen it). My name was taken from a TV show and no one now remembers it.

dizzydixies · 27/06/2008 21:47

I don't think they will as although she's 'supposed' to be the main character she's out acted but many others in the show

its lovely

nappyaddict · 27/06/2008 21:46

don't like merry though. i know a meredith who goes by Merridie as a nick name.

QuintessentialShadows · 27/06/2008 21:46

Love it, one of my best friends is Meredith. great name.

meglet · 27/06/2008 21:46

avenanap I don't watch grays anatomy , although if we do use the name I'm sure everyone will say the same thing to us!
