Vote on these traditional boys names

Struggling to choose between these traditional boys names. I also like Cameron and Hamish, but I probably won’t use one of them. Vote for your favourite to help me decide. Thanks!

Why would you let strangers on-line help
you to pick your child’s name? Odd

Why would you ask that on a baby names board?😂

It is because IRL people tend not to be honest about giving feedback. Names carry quite a lot of baggage in the sense that people often get an initial opinion about someone on the basis of it - not fair, no, but it does happen.

Another benefit of asking online is that she gets a wider range of feedback than her own social circle.

I vote Henry. James is dull as dishwater and George is just awful. I quite like Hamish but it sounds very Scottish so maybe odd if he doesn’t have Scottish ancestry.

Pistachiocake · 21/08/2026 00:13

Great choices-classless and popular without being too much so. James has pretty much always been the most classic. The first three are likely to "always" be classics. Cameron has actually been very popular over the last couple of decades. Hamish is the most "different" sounding one and if he doesn't have a Scottish accent, he might get asked about it by every stranger, only going off someone with an Irish name who keeps getting asked why she has a Manchester accent!

DramaAlpaca · 20/08/2026 22:25

I'm not that keen on George but I really like all the others, especially James.

Zuve · 20/08/2026 19:39

I like Ernest, Gordon, Clarke,

Have you never met a Baby Names thread before 😂

Hamish is very Scottish to me, so I think that would be a weird choice without a Scottish link.

My first and second choice would be James and Cameron.

Excellentsausages · 19/08/2026 21:49

Hamish is my favourite but voted Henry of the options.

James is a mumsnet favourite, I knew it would win the poll! I've known some lovely Jameses but also a couple of awful ones, there's something I just don't like about it. I like all the diminutives of James though, especially Jamie.

I like James, but voted - and prefer - Henry.

Nest choice would be Hamish and James equal (and I think they are English and Scottish versions of each other aren't they?) and lastly George and Cameron.

I know George is a classic, but I'm really not fond of the sound.

SpottyAlpaca · 20/08/2026 17:58

I voted for James, but (assuming you’re of Scottish heritage) I prefer Hamish & Cameron to all of them.

BatsInHibernation · 20/08/2026 14:35

I love Henry, like James, and have no feelings about George.
Hamish is fantastic.

xOlive · 20/08/2026 08:34

I love Hamish.
I voted for James.
I know of so many Georges.
I strongly dislike Cameron.
Henry, meh.

Wherethedogsits · 20/08/2026 08:33

James over any boys name. It’s lovely.

RVectensian · 20/08/2026 08:33

Our James is normally known by his full name which he prefers (he's 8), or Jim sometimes, Jimbob, Jem. Rarely Jamie for some reason.

RVectensian · 20/08/2026 08:32

In real life (I worked in a primary school up until around a year ago, and have 2 teens for reference) I know one Cameron, no Hamishes, and 2 James. One of which is mine.

They may never date, but they also don’t fulfill their purpose of identifying someone (without having to add a surname or other identifier)

That's ludicrous. Does everyone on the planet need a completely unique name.Or they can't be identified?

Bizarre.

Helenbelena · 20/08/2026 08:11

WeddingDressguest · 19/08/2026 21:50

There's so many of them as they are classics that never go out of fashion. There's nothing wrong with a classic as they never date.

They’re all fine but very dull….. There are far too many of them imo. Are there no other names you like?

Really lovely names that will take your child anywhere. So refreshing after all the ridiculous modern names that are usually saddled on babies.

Refreshing? I know at least 10 boys/men named Henry, James & George each.

LittleGreenShoots · 19/08/2026 19:09

I love Cameron and Hamish. I think your list of names to vote on is playing it safe, but why?

DemonsandMosquitoes · 19/08/2026 19:07

I only like James (DS1 middle name).

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 19/08/2026 18:39

Hamish is outstanding, the others a bit dull imo

Fifthtimelucky · 19/08/2026 18:37

James top, then George and then Henry.

I don’t like Cameron or Hamish.

TrojanDonkey · 19/08/2026 18:31

There are so many Georges at my DC’s school and more. About 6 in their year plus a friend has a George.
