Terry?

Namechange because it’s possibly quite outing.

Is Terry due a revival as a boys name? It’s my son’s name and we haven’t met another under the age of about 50! He was named after his grandad, at the time I hated it but it’s grown on me, so under the guise of a name change I wondered what honest opinions are of the name.

Its awful and you know it

only saving grace it will be completely uniqe and he friends will have no negative connotations

It is not awful. You just have different tastes.

Even older blast from the past, “Please wait at the gates of heaven for me,Terry” 🎶 by Twinkle. I do have a soft spot for the name, but I’m 70

I camt believe women are still deferring to the fathers choice of name after putting their bodies through the stress of carrying and bearing a child

I can’t believe that you didn’t read the bit where I said I didn’t have a name I loved anyway.

Terry is a teenager now, has two younger brothers who by the time they came along I had a strong opinion on both names so it’s hardly like I am some beaten wife because my DH had a name he wanted to use and I had nothing better.

Probably not due a revival for another 10 or 20 years. But that will be cool for him, and all his mates will have names that have become dated.

Dean Winchester sounds cool

Or Fine

Or Pin, or Cotter.

OneStarAwake · 18/08/2026 08:28

I think it is quite cute. Better than some of the made up names with daft spelling.

SummerCity26 · 18/08/2026 08:23

It’s very old-fashioned and I don’t think it will ever be popular again. Yes it’s a grandad name even for my generation and I am 60!

Having said that, all the Terrys I have ever known were lovely!

I like it. As long as your surname isn’t Bull…

Love it as a man's name. Great name!

Lins77 · 14/08/2026 15:20

I like Terry more than Terence - and Terry does feel (to me anyway) more like a whole name than all the Alfies and Albies and Archies of recent years.

BCBird · 14/08/2026 14:33

I think it's a granddad's name

BCBird · 14/08/2026 14:33

Terry Yaki made me 😃

Whosthetabbynow · 14/08/2026 14:29

No. It reminds me of a twat who gave me a black eye.

ginasevern · 14/08/2026 14:27

@BewareOfTheFakes I love it OP. It's a fine name. There won't be 500 others in the same school and he won't be defined by an era or a celebrity fad. I personally would've chosen Terence so he has a choice in later life but otherwise all good.

Blorengia · 14/08/2026 14:08

I think it's fine, a diminutive of Terrance/Terrence.
It's a little bit unusual for these days without being completely unheard-of.

localnotail · 14/08/2026 13:56

Wasn't it the name of that pervy American photographer?.. Terry Richardson. I've accidentally seen some weird shit he's been up to so his name stuck. He had "T-bone" tattooed above his bits (wt fuck do I remember this).

On the other hand, Terry Wogan. Lovely guy.

Is he Terry or Terence?

Edited: I can see you said he is Terry. I honestly thing Terence would have been better. Always thought its weird to give your child only one option of a name.

MyPeachBiscuit · 14/08/2026 13:32

To me it's a very mid-century kind of name. It's dated now but maybe it will come back in 40 years. Names typically have a 100 year popularity cycle.

I'm sorry that you were pressured into choosing a name that you didn't like.

violetcuriosity · 12/08/2026 09:50

My Dad is Terry 🩷

hamnish · 12/08/2026 09:15

It’s funny that for anyone over 40ish, Terry has such specific mental associations that it fell so completely out of fashion to the point where anyone under 20 must have ZERO preconceptions - and so, I guess, if they like the sound of it, it could come back in a decade or two. Ditto Sharon, Tracey, Gary, etc.

Then there’s that crop of very 70s Scottish boys names - Craig, Malcolm, Duncan, Scott, Keith - are they due a revival, now they’re all grandads and not heart throbs with one pierced ear in Jackie magazine photo love stories?

LancashireButterPie · 12/08/2026 09:00

I don't like it, for me it's a bit phoenix nights.
But tastes change, maybe there will be lots of like Terry's running around soon.
(and who doesn't love a chocolate orange?)
