Jacklyn or Jacquelyn?

GoodTimesRolll · 10/08/2026 19:40

I love the way that Americans pronounce the name Jacqueline and am certain that I want DD’s name to be pronounced like that. In the UK, ‘Jacqueline’ is not going to receive the pronunciation that I’m intending. What do you think of Jacklyn or Jacquelyn? DH likes the first spelling better, and I prefer the second. I’m typically not keen on alternate spellings, but I see these as entirely separate names with different pronunciations so don’t think it quite counts as that.

Fine if you want to spend your life / your daughter’s life correcting the spelling as people in the UK will spell it the Traditional UK way. Most people will see the spelling you propose and assume it’s an error.

ThatMintMember · 17/08/2026 23:43

No idea but expect it to be spelt wrong forever! I have an auntie Jackie/Jacqueline and I can never figure out how best to spell it. Even her own mother spelt it wrong at times which never helped me with getting it right!

Tintackedsea · 17/08/2026 22:35

Just tell people how to pronounce it. It’s not a big deal and everyone who uses her name on a regular basis will do ask you ask. Spell it correctly though because that’s the prettiest written down. The alternate spellings aren’t nearly as nice.

schoolsoutforever · 17/08/2026 19:03

Jacqueline (this spelling) is a lovely name on paper. You should pronounce it whatever way you want and others will do what they want. If you are happy for your child's name to be mispronounced (it wouldn't bother me I don't think) then I would go for this. As many PPs have mentioned the French pronunciation and the British version are a bit different so I'm not sure worrying about the pronunciation is terribly important (...unless it is to you...?). Sorry - I realise that I have been unhelpful - but I like the original spelling MUCH more.

Calliopespa · 17/08/2026 18:23

How about Jack-o-Lantern?🎃

Horrible datedname but if you must

jac - lynn double barrel would get closer to what you want but still have yo do lots if corrections

I’m inclined to agree re it being dated. And the risk of it becoming the ghastly ‘Jackie’ is huge.

RobertaFirmino · 17/08/2026 17:20

Do you mean like Tony Jacklin?

Jacqueline is pronounced Jacklynn here in East Scotland. Please don’t set her up for a lifetime of having to spell her name. The phonetic spellings look a bit dim. I remember seeing Jorja once and cringed so much.

ScruffMuffin · 14/08/2026 11:31

I know a Jaclyn. I think that is the correct spelling.

Jacklyn 😂
Just awful and chavvy

A name is only ever as ‘chavvy’ or as ‘posh’ as the person who is called it. You could be called Jayden or Nevaeh (or have a child called that), and people will overlook the name and not give it a second thought/notice if you’re upper class.

I don’t think the British pronunciation is Jack-a-lean, I’m British and I’ve never heard it pronounced that way. We say Jack-a-Lin.

Maybe it varies regionally then, but in Scotland it is always Jack-a-leen. It sounds like that is the same wherever OP is otherwise why would she be raising the question?

Aidezmo · 11/08/2026 09:23

The British pronounciation of Jacqueline tends to be Jack-uh-lean whereas the US pronunciation is Jack-uh-lynn. I agree that the latter is much nicer, but I'm not sure that alternative spellings will get the desired effect, and the child is probably going to end up being called Jackie either way, which I really dislike.

Jacqueline will be pronounced the French way, Shack-eh-leen

I‘d spell it Jacklyn if you prefer Jack-lyn.

Have you ever heard of a Jaqueline in the UK being pronouced with a SH noise at the start? I certainly haven't!

I love Jackie, thankfully! I just want to make sure that her full name is spelt in a way that makes it clear how I’d like for it to be pronounced when she’s called it.

Then Jaclyn is your best bet.

Neither.. can’t you spell it right

If it’s spelt Jacqueline then it’s going to be pronounced jack-uh-leen, as that is the most common pronunciation in the UK. The OP seems to want it to be pronounced either jack-uh-lin or jack-lin, so it doesn’t make much sense to use the Jacqueline spelling.

Jaclyn is a real name. One of Charlie’s Angels is a Jaclyn. According to Wikipedia there’s plenty of them so it’s quite well known 😊

This is the best option
Your suggestions just make you look illiterate

Gettingbysomehow · 11/08/2026 00:51

For Gods sake why? Ive spent half my life asking people with this name how they spell it. Think of the mistakes on every document your daughter will ever have to manage.

TeaAndALittlePeace · 11/08/2026 00:48

saveforthat · 10/08/2026 19:54

She will be Jackie/Jack before you know it, however you spell it.

Came here to say this too.

Then why not go for? Jack-Lynn ??

DressOrSkirt · 11/08/2026 00:37

Out of all the options on this thread I like Jaclyn the most.
If you want to make sure it's pronounced as Jack-Lynn then you could keep it hyphenated like that?

CoffeeBotherer · 11/08/2026 00:37

She'll have to put up with that dreadful misspelling her entire life - do you think that's fair to her? And for what, the half dozen times in her life that it won't get shortened?
