Why has Felicity become trendy?

I love the name Felicity but have noticed that it's become trendy. It used to be an unusual name but experienced a (seemingly random) sudden rise in popularity. It's quite literally everywhere now. Why is this? Did some celebrity or 'influencer' name their child Felicity? Has there been a character called Felicity? I've had to take it off the list. I just can't do trendy names as they always date terribly. By trendy, I'm referring to names that experience a sudden rise in usage, usually due to a cultural phenomenon, when they were once uncommon.

OP posts:

I agree. Maybe faddy is a better word to describe what I'm talking about.

It's not! It's now ranked at 152, down from 97 10 years ago. It's not popular, or trendy or daddy at the moment.

But that’s not how it’s pronounced. That’s an English mispronunciation.

How is it pronounced @scallopshelled? In Ireland are you referring to?

I did this with the name Deirdre in the St Clares books- I thought it was pronounced in some beautiful way, was most disappointing when I heard it on Corrie 🤣

Felicity is a nice name. It doesn't give me pony club vibes, it reminds me of neighbours. I've only taught one too which is unusual.

Pony club name 😂

When I read the Mallory Towers books, I loved the name (Darrell’s little sister) but I’d never heard it pronounced, and I thought it was Felickity. Gorgeous!! I also thought Alicia was Alickia.

I knew a Felicity, she was in her 70s in the 1990s. Definitely a pony club type. I don’t think I’ve ever met another.

Missey85 · 09/08/2026 02:01

Sounds a lot better than some of the stupid made up names people call there children 😊

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 09/08/2026 01:58

It’s pretty. Not trendy as yet.

My Felicity is 17,never had another one in her nursery, primary or secondary school. Not one at her 6th form college either!! Her older sister is Hattie and the same applies to her, plus none at Uni!!

I'm in my 60s and have never met a Felicity - or even heard of one, apart from Felicity Kendall. (Maybe I've led a sheltered life.)

But I do know a 10yo Hattie. And isn't there an actor called Hattie Hayridge?

Both are nice names, I think.

Shloopie · 09/08/2026 01:27

Damn those dreadful plebs trying to steal the poshos' names! They should be horse whipped (at the pony club)

Slightyamusedandsilly · 09/08/2026 01:18

I know a few. It's the Arlo of girls names this year. The working class want to be posh name. I don't blame you for taking it off your list @Livingintheunknown.

theres an actress called Felicity day i think thats been in eg eureka / supernatural shows

Her name is Felicia.

SouthLondonMum22 · 09/08/2026 01:11

I have a 2 year old Felicity and I haven't met any others yet. it doesn't seem faddy or trendy at all to me.

mumisfull · 09/08/2026 01:04

I’m not the biggest fan of Felicity - if you’re not careful it can be very twee. There’s a news reader in our area called Felicity Simper and I always wonder what her parents were thinking to saddle her with such a wet lettuce name!

with a strong surname it’s nowhere near as bad.

Moveoverdarlin · 08/08/2026 16:03

Not remotely trendy. 80s posh pony club type.

I know of two but they are both in their 40s - both go by the name of Flick.

NamingNoNames · 08/08/2026 15:57

@Livingintheunknown , Baby name explorer shows the popularity in England& Wales since 1996 and is based on ONS data.

greglet · 08/08/2026 13:23

I know two; one would be 40 now and the other is four. I really like it!

fromgothtoboss · 08/08/2026 13:21

Looking at the dark greener name website, it was briefly in the top 100 on 2018/2019ish but seems to be declining in popularity now and is at around 150.

LadyWhistledownsSocietyPapers · 08/08/2026 13:02

I love this name! It would shortlisted for me if I had another baby. However it just reminds me of the Mallory Towers books, I've never actually met anyone called Felicity.

Plenty of Isla's, though.

Sherararara · 08/08/2026 12:35

Not at all common. Only know of one child with the name.

girljulian · 08/08/2026 12:33

i love Felicity, it would have been on my list for a girl. But I only know one and she’s 40.
