this is our current shortlist (in no particular order)

Scott and Cameron. Scott cannot be shortened and was a popular name in the 90s, isn't out there and a more traditional name people will have heard of and can spell.
Cameron is also in the more traditional bracket and the only difference is, it can be shortened so make sure your happy with the nicknames associated with that name. It's not fair on a child if you will only let them be known by the full length version of their name because you hate the nicknames.

Saying that I have a very out there name (for the decade I was born anyway) that couldn't be shortened and people still shorten it to a sound (and I hate it) think Alex to Al type thing.

I really like Tristan and was on my list for DS but everyone else seems to dislike it.

Which name is at the top of your list OP?

Scousers are expert at this. One colleague, Ian, lamented the fact that our lovely Scouse colleague could shorten his name to "E".😂

I'd choose James because it is timeless. You can have a baby, teen, middle aged man or pensioner called James - bit like Elizabeth for a girl.

My name shrieks middle aged woman and I'd love a name where no one could guess what decade I was born in.

Miles - ok but one of those names I’ve never liked much, but personal preference rather than it being awful

Tristan - really like it, not heard as much these days but it’s nice

Cameron - love it, my favourite on your list

Connor - like

Scott - like

Harrison - ok but a bit American sounding

James - nice, classic name, nothing wrong with it but a little bit boring

EssCarGo · 26/07/2026 15:54

Tristan is lush 😍

Wherethedogsits · 26/07/2026 15:58

James is my favourite name and the only one that I like from your list.

Jugjug · 26/07/2026 16:04

I find it interesting nobody ever points out that Tristan is the name of Andrew tates brother.
But I’ve seen names on this site become “big nos” because of certain celebrities or politicians who are far less controversial.

(Andrew and Tristan Tate are being extradited for human trafficking and child pornography possession)

Probably because most people probably couldn't tell you what Andrew Tate's brother's name is. He just isn't that well known. But I wouldn't say to someone 'you can't call your son Andrew because of the Andrew Tate association'. That would be silly. For me it's only when a name is uncommon and mainly associated with a notorious figure. Myra, for example.

EssCarGo · 26/07/2026 16:40

If someone suggested Andrew, I wouldn’t think Tate, never mind his brother!

alexdgr8 · 26/07/2026 16:42

James.
The others sound like fads. Will date soon.
James is classic throughout the ages.

Tristan is an uncommon name.

How old are you? I’m in my 20s and most people my age know who Andrew tates brother is.

whippyskippy · 26/07/2026 17:47

I prefer James from that list, it's timeless and is used by people from all walks of life.

ThatMintMember · 26/07/2026 18:15

Miles and James are my favourite. James is my sons middle name but Miles was a close 2nd. Miles would be on our list if our 2nd was a boy. They also both work great as middle names.

I like a 2 or 3 syllable first name with a 1 syllable middle name. Tristan James, Connor Miles, Harrison James, Cameron Miles...

AgnesMcDoo · 26/07/2026 18:20

James is my favourite

Scott and Cameron are great

Connor is ok

loathe the rest

flakersbaker · 26/07/2026 21:00

I only like Scott and Harrison

darkandgloomy · 26/07/2026 21:35

Harrison is the nicest

Gemstonebeach · 27/07/2026 09:01

I love Miles and James, all the others are fine though!

MJEBinAthens · 27/07/2026 09:15

My brother is Miles James, but is nearing 60 and has never been called Miles by anyone… parents who gave him the name included! James for the win from me.
Personally, I think any names that are usually surnames ie Harrison/Mason/Tyler/Hunter etc. are naff and very American. What’s wrong with Harry? Scott sounds like a typical Aussie name!
I also think it depends on your surname. Do all these suggestions go with it, or do some sound better than others?

Abracadabra12 · 27/07/2026 09:37

I like Miles and James best

CarriMarie · 27/07/2026 09:41

Cameron or Tristan, with James as middle name.

I like Connor and Harrison - I have a Connor - James and Cameron are nice too.

I don’t like Tristan (sounds a bit public school) or Scott (popular name when I was a child and there were a few I disliked)

CurlewKate · 29/07/2026 14:13

James or Miles

CypressMoon · 29/07/2026 14:14
