Getting there on the names. Ruby still in the mix, but something about Mabel I can't shake off lately and think it is very soft and pretty.

I like Ruby, it's fun and sparky and in no way 'harsh'.

Objectively I can see Mabel is probably quite pretty, but as it was my late grandma's name it's too 1906 for me! Will always give me old lady vibes but I appreciate that won't be the case for new parents of today.

Mabel was my late Grandmother's name too (born 1917), except she hated it for being too old fashioned and always went by her middle name. Even joked about making sure 'the M word' wasn't to be used at her funeral. It makes me laugh to see it becoming popular, when it was too 'old lady' for my gran!

Ruby is very dated, Mabel is very popular. Does either name go better with your surname?

plinkero · 21/07/2026 19:51

Mabel is a cracking name. Wish I’d thought of it

Excellentsausages · 21/07/2026 19:44

Mabel is lovely. I also met a tiny Sybil at a playgroup recently- it sounded really nice when they were calling her name.

Ruby will date soon i think. It's not bad but not the best.

I can’t get past Ruby Murray.
Mable is lovely.

Not spelt like that it isn't. I don't like Mabel at all.

amandalandmad · 20/07/2026 21:50

lots of dogs called Mabel… I do love it though

I would go Ruby over Mabel personally.

MinnieCoops · 19/07/2026 21:06

Mabel. No question.

wendywoopywoo222 · 19/07/2026 20:55

I can’t vote as they are two of my favourite names.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 19/07/2026 20:53

Mabel. It feels more substantial to me.

Buzzer3555 · 19/07/2026 20:45

Mabel is lovely. Ruby is nice but a bit too popular

Absolutely Mabel. Ruby is to me quite a harsh name and I think soon quite dated.

IeatPotNoodles · 18/07/2026 21:51

Ruby is due a comeback I think. To me, Mabel is a dog name but only because I grew up at the time of Blue Peter with Matt Baker and his sheepdog Mabel!

Firebird83 · 18/07/2026 21:37

Mabel. Ruby feels very 2006.
