Middle name ideas for Finn with an overlooked, uncommon feel

aguynamedfinn · 13/07/2026 11:20

I'm in the process of legally changing my full name because I've never gone by it at any point in my life. I've been going by Finn for years. I chose a last name but I don't want my full name on the internet, so let's say it starts with M

The only long version of Finn that I like is Serafin, but my sisters name is Sarah, so it's out of the question, which is why my name is just Finn

I can't think of any names I like for my middle name. I liked Allison, Clancy, and Spencer but not enough to keep one of them

I like overlooked, usually not listed, lesser known names

Finn is a name all by itself and doesn’t need a lengthened version!

Dariella · 14/07/2026 21:19

CitronellaCandles · 14/07/2026 20:34

Except it’s pronounced Fyunn.

Not in Fionnuala usually ime.
https://forvo.com/word/fionnuala/

The pronunciation of Fionn in Irish varies by dialect anyway.

Dariella · 14/07/2026 10:14

Yes it is. I know a Fionnuala who goes by Finn.

Except it’s pronounced Fyunn.

In case you're looking for gender neutral or gender ambiguous names-

Finn Carey
Finn Elliott
Finn Emerson
Finn Avery
Finn Rowan
Finn Robin
Finn Cassidy
Finn Piper
Finn Harley
Finn Adair
Finn Marlow
Finn Sinclair

Are you looking for names that are gender neutral, masculine, or feminine?

Your list (Allison, Clancy, Spencer) doesn't make it clear. I know women and men named Spemcer and Clancy, and Allison used to be exclusively a surname, then a man's name, then a woman's..

Fintan is a longer name that could shorten to Finn.
So is Finola.
Fintan is masculine and Finola is feminine.

@FunnyOrca , @Dariella , Allison isn't common for women.

Alison is from French and is a form of Alice.
Allison is from 'son of Allen'.

Allison is used a lot for women in Scotland and North America. I have a lot of female colleagues 35-45-ish called Alison/Allison and it’s a pretty even split on the spelling. I’m not saying it’s “correct” but it is fairly widely used.

Anyway, to answer OP I think Allison is a nice unexpected middle name for Finn.

I have never heard of a man called Alison! My best friend is called Alison but she is female.

Dariella · 14/07/2026 12:30

Both spellings are used now for the first name. In the US Allison is the significantly more popular choice, almost always for girls I should think.

Allison is originally a male name. Given that OP was asking for something a bit uncommon, I assumed male as Allison/Alison is very come for women.

Google says the forename evolved as a medieval French version of Alice.

It’s also a surname though, and surnames were sometimes given as forenames.

Finn Ellery.

patooties · 14/07/2026 10:55

Are you male or female?

FunnyOrca · 14/07/2026 10:54

Dariella · 14/07/2026 10:34

Thanks, you’re right.
I misread Serafin as Serafina so thought it was female names OP was looking for.
Allison is definitely a name for women so I agree it’s not clear.

And the OPs user name suggests they are too, although it isn't entirely clear from their initial post so let's ask.

@aguynamedfinn are you after masculine, feminine or neutral/unisex name suggestions?
