a good friend of mine has a caitlin and i think it is a beautiful name
i dont mind whether the parent choosing the name spells it one way or another as it is their choice and therefore not to be whispered about by people who should care for the person and not sneer at the name.
maybe they couldnt decide between kate and caitlin so decided to compromise and have both in a way. either way the name sounds just the same and is just a lovely as i am sure the child is.
i have a name which was sneered/sniggered at as a child and it is hurtful to the child as they have no choice. so regardless of what you may think of the name at the end of the day it isnt your buisness to put your opinion in especially if the name is already the given name IYSWIM. i love my DDs name but not everyone does. that doesnt mean that their opinion matters at all to my decision just that they have one. i wouldnt like to think that my choice is being laughed at because the person has a particular opinion about the name. i am sure that in time (if it is a baby/small child) it wont matter how the childs name is spelt as most likely she will chop and change it as she grows up and it will no longer be spelt the way her parents intended or in the way you dislike.
at the end of the day it is only a name so not something to get too worked up about IMO
xx ei xx

How do they pronounce it ? Katelyn is,ime, a different name to Caitlin/Kathleen, although it orginates from it. I first heard it about 12 years ago in Australia and it was pronounced Kate lyn. Its also popular in the USA and has travelled over here in the last few years. Prefer Caitlin though.

This is family though
There will be whispering behind hands.

Turniphead: only one name dor irish girl born at Christmas: Nollag!

Ellbell · 25/06/2008 23:44

Both, imvho, are better than...

Kaytlan

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 25/06/2008 23:36

I think you do just that - keep smiling and saying 'such a pretty name'. It isn't inherently wrong in the minds of the people choosing the name and, ultimately, that's what matters. I have fierce opinions on names but only in the context of my own offspring's names do those opinions count for anything.

RosaLuxembunting · 25/06/2008 23:18

So now does anyone have any suggestions for how I smile sweetly and keep my trap zipped about the inherent wrongness of the name being inflicted on this poor, innocent babe.

I am a Caitlin and always have to spell it for people. I really like it because it is still fairly unusual to find anyone my age (30s) called Caitlin. I'm generally known as Cait though (could you guess?? )

snuffy143 · 25/06/2008 20:16

I have a Caitlin, too. I love it and we have never had a weird spelling! I think Katelyn is a bit chavvy, too! We picked it cos of its Gaelic connections.

Flumpybumpy · 25/06/2008 20:01

I have a Caitlin but people still spell it Caitlyn, Katelyn, Kaitlin etc....

I still love the name though.

GreenGodess · 25/06/2008 18:11

Caitlin - all the way the other spelling is really naff

EtonsMessCat · 25/06/2008 17:48

The first spelling. Never heard of the second. Bit chavvy imo

keevamum · 25/06/2008 17:44

I toyed with the name for my two DD's but didn't go for it but may still use for no.3. My Irish grandmother was Kate and so I would personally prefer Katelyn so I could shorten it to Kate but unsure following this thread.

Hulababy · 25/06/2008 17:38

Caitlin

Katelyn looks like a made up name, or like the parent can't spell
