I find this interesting - there was a book I read when I still read books (Freakanomics I think but don't quote me) about how names carry less status as time goes on as people try and name their children the social class above them. Think this is true of Oscar for sure.

The most popular names of Dukes / Viscounts are Charles, Edward and James. A few Henrys, Williams and Georges in there too. So the classic Anglo Saxon names. I like the fact that these names could be Dukes or work in Tesco. Know a few people who've called their kids Sebastian or Hugo in an attempt to get a few rungs up the ladder and it always seems too obvious although DH says that by thinking this I'm worse than they are.

I tried to call my kids names I liked and not a class signifier although we're all so steeped in it I'm sure I subconciously did this anyway.

They're all quite mainstream but I'd say Leo is probably the least posh- many of the Leos I know round here fall into the "social services involvement" category. Max is also quite often a poorer background sort of name.

Henry and Oscar are possibly more likely to be middle class, whereas there are so many Georges from all backgrounds that I couldn't categorise it.

Overall the are all commonly used enough that they wouldn't mark a child out as posh or not posh.

All of those in DS classes. Absolutely none of them posh, so I wouldn't consider those posh names.

My ranking would be

poshest: George, Henry, Max, Leo, Oscar: least posh

Oscar and Leo are not posh imho. If Max was Maximilian that would change things.

I have 4 teenage boys and they all know loads of boys called these names. Some at private schools, some at local academies and some at grammar school. Parents range from builders to lawyers. Youngest son plays Rugby and Football and each team has at least one of all of these. The Rugby team has 2 Maxs and 2 Oscars and 1 each of the other, Football team has one of each. His school year has 1 Leo, 1 Oscar, 3 or 4 Maxs and 2 Georges. I really think these are generic boy names now and pretty classless.

Names that still come across as 'posh-boy' to me are more about double barelled surnames. Poshest kids I know are also called fairly generic names like James and Henry. I know some UMC Teddys as well. I dont think I know any actual aristos so dont know what they call their boys these days, but I'd guess similat to all these.

I don't think George was considered especially posh though even though it was a regal name, as there was a proliferation of working class boys called it pre-war, including my father.

I think the upper classes and WC have always shared names like George and Albert. It's the MC who go off on tangents with Sheridan and Caspian.

I only know of posh Horatios and Peregrines Op! That's where you should head if you want conspicuously posh. Most posh family names are not conspicuously posh and are actually quite widely used, like Charles, Henry, Edward.

@TreylimeNo of course not, but both Oliver and Sebastian are what I’d think of as generally (but not exclusively) middle class names now; 40-odd years ago they were probably more UMC.

Sebastian is now MC at a push I'd say!

I would rank them as follows (in order of descending poshness): Henry, George, Max, Leo, Oscar. They're all perfectly nice boys names though, although the only ones we had on the list for our own DC were Max and Leo.

Oscar and Max and Leo have never really been posh. They have had a surge of popularity but are bourgeois if anything.
