Elliot/Elliott for a boy. Will it get shorted to Ellie ? And which spelling?

Love it. The only reason i didnt use it for ds is because dd2's name starts El. I prefer the Elliott spelling personally. I only know 1, a 3 year old

If you search I did this exact post maybe a couple of months back. Mumsnet voted Elliott , a July babies Facebook group I'm in voted Elliot.
My baby is due July and If I have a boy I'm going Elliot with one T ☺️.

How about Elio?

It avoids the estate agent thing and I think it sounds slightly more stylish. Elliott is fine but a bit sort of US Boffin to me. I imagine he wears y fronts!

Mine is an Elliot (double t is surname imo) and he now gets El.

This is one of the few boys names I feel drawn to. To be honest I didn’t initially realise/associate it with being a surname. I like it, I think it sounds nice and is less on the popular side without being too “out there”. I think I would likely go for the spelling of Elliot or Elliott personally, not for any particular reason though!

It's a lovely name and I've never met an Elliot I don't like. I've also never heard it shortened to Ellie. Great choice OP.

I like Elliot (one t, Elliott looks too much like a surname).

I've never known one be called Ellie. 'El' maybe, but not Ellie.

It’s my favour boys name! Elliott.. has to be spelt like this for me. Would have used it definitely but I have 2 girls.

@StationJack I know people with the surname Andrew and Donald. I guess there are many surnames used as first names…Elliot being one.

I really like Elliott. I prefer the 2 ts. It seems more balanced spelt that way.

It's an established first name as well as a surname so I don't really get the Estate Agent thing. Lots of names are first names and surnames. Andrew, Donald, Samuel, Denis, Edward, Fraser etc.

I like it but didn't pick it as I was worried he might get called Smelliot.

Also, it reminds me of Elliott Smith whose music was beautiful but died quite tragically by suicide (the details of which I found disturbing) so that put me off. If you don't know who he is though then don't let that affect your choice.

I can’t imagine it would become Ellie. You can't tell until you use the name. Kids can be creative with nicknames.

i know two (young adults), they both get called ‘El’ for short.

I never thought that about the ones I know and I know 2 families with the surname Elliot.
