Thoughts on Skylar for a girl? I find it pretty but cannot picture it on a woman who is 30+. I'm thinking it might be one of those names that doesn't age well because of the youthful quality it has.

Love it! If MN hate it and call it trashy I’d take that as a compliment 😂

schoolsoutforever · 20/06/2026 19:39

I think of Breaking Bad and American names. If you are from the UK, where I am, I think Skye is more pleasant and reminds me of the beautiful island.

GladHazelPoster · 17/06/2026 20:27

Why not Sorcha?

PolkaDotPorridge · 17/06/2026 20:06

Dreadful cheap sounding name.

timoteigirl · 17/06/2026 19:51

Comes from the Dutch word meaning scholar. I prefer Skyler to Skylar

MyDuvetDay · 16/06/2026 22:48

Skylar for me falls into the same bucket as Madison, Harper, Taylor, Dakota… very American and very 00s

Dublassie · 16/06/2026 22:47

Dreadful . Skylar in Breaking Bad was the epitome of a pain in the arse .

Calliopespa · 16/06/2026 22:44

Another poster here who prefers Skye.

Skylar makes me think of Skyscraper. Imagine if she is really tall.🏢

Laiste · 16/06/2026 21:37

There's a Skyla in DDs year. Just out of primary.

Her mother used to yell up the street ''Skyluuuuur!''

Its tarred it with a certain brush for me.

SabbatWheel · 16/06/2026 21:31

Have taught one Skylar and know of another, both in their mid to late teens now.
It has definite connotations of lower socio-economic class, unfortunately, as it’s quite a pretty name.

Not as unique as 'Eurina', the name her parents proudly told a teacher of my acquaintance they had made up themselves 😬 Then they asked 'Do you like it, miss?'

Sister to the more famous Chlamydia

HoppityBun · 16/06/2026 21:21

I was going to suggest that it’s a bit dated, but perhaps it one of those 90s names that’s coming round again

Trallers · 16/06/2026 21:20

Would you pronounce it the same as Skyler/Skyla? The only Skylar I know is very particular about it being said Sky-larrr which I very find very unnatural and have to pay close attention to my pronunciation every time!

Jimbog · 16/06/2026 21:17

Not keen. I like Sky, but don’t see the point of adding an e.

FitAt50 · 16/06/2026 21:14

It sounds very common

Xmasallergies · 16/06/2026 21:12

It’s fine but I think Skye is nicer personally

IdaGlossop · 16/06/2026 14:43

wandawaves · 30/05/2026 01:17

Can't stand it. IMO it sounds like one of those "yooneek" names where someone thought "well i like Skye, and i like Kyla, so let's smoosh them together coz that's so cool".

IdaGlossop · 16/06/2026 14:32

It sounds like a rapid mass transport system an airport, or a bird that lost its 'k'.

Typo

LittleGreenShoots · 16/06/2026 14:25

I associate the name very strongly with breaking bad. But she's not that bad a character, just not a lovable one.

I would prefer Skye myself.

FleshLiabilities · 16/06/2026 14:23

I agree it works for all ages, from an 18 year old pole dancer to a 60 year old pole dancer.

Enko · 16/06/2026 13:36

I like it and think it works for all ages.

HugoThatway · 16/06/2026 13:13

Trashy, American, sounds made up and will date (if it hasn't already) badly.
I agree.

Nincompoo · 16/06/2026 13:00

I prefer Skyla but wouldn’t use it. Skylar White was one of the most annoying women ever.

Greentinselstar · 16/06/2026 12:58

The more I have read the name on this thread it has grown on me slightly and I can see why someone would think it is pretty.

However, initially I thought it is anything but youthful, more a 30-40 something working in a diner in some crap town in a desert in the US, does a few turns on the pole at the local strip club to make ends meet.

Sorry!
