Inspired by the thread asking if people don't like their names. As someone trying to choose a name for our upcoming baby, it would be so useful to know what type of names people tend to like throughout life and which they hate and why etc. I was surprised on the other thread that so many people disliked having a popular name!

I realise this is very outing if your name is very unusual so you may not want to say it. I've obviously name changed. I'll go first!

Nicola (nickname Nicky) I'm a mid 80s baby so Nicola was still popular amongst my peers but not overly so. It was even more popular in the 70s. There was a couple of others in my year at school. I didn't hate my name but I would have preferred a more girly name when I was younger. I didn't like that Nicola is a boys name in other parts of Europe.
The vast majority of Nicolas are my age or older which is slightly ageing, so I'm wary of that when choosing my own kids names. I MUCH prefer Nicky and I'm glad I have a nickname option.
Overall I'm fine with it and can't imagine changing it but I'd probably choose something different for myself.

My name is Louise. Every woman seems to have it as a middle name rather than a first name.
I quite like the name. My friends all call me Lou.

Ha ha My name is Marianne Theresa. My eldest brother is James Terence but known as Terry. I went through a phase as a teenager of calling myself Terry much to my mothers horror. My reasoning was if he was know by his middle name why couldn't I? My 1st name has been a bit of a nightmare. Hardly anyone ever spells it correctly or pronounces properly. I have been called Maryanne Marie anne, Marion and even Mirium. Children can't pronounce it and it usually comes out as Ma we anne, Mi anne and Maggy anne. I hate it shortened to Mari or Anne. I have some close friends who call me Maz but I am not fond of that either. I was nearly a Beverly so glad I am not it wouldn't suite me.

My name is Terri-Ann, a mixture of my DF/DMs name. I generally get called Tess, which I much prefer. I suppose it's better than Andromeda, which my DM really wanted!

In the sea of Sophies, Charlottes and Jessicas it didn’t feel pretty in the 90’s but I love it now. One of my friends recently named their daughter Laura too and I love that they brought it back!

It was my girl choice for my son in 1998 - lovely classic name - but turns out he was a Thomas William

Really surprised that no one has said my name yet…I am convinced it is THE most common name in the world (or at least the UK) for a girl born in the late 80’s…any guesses?

My middle name is also the most common name on here 🤣

I don’t really like it, especially as my mum was between my name and Alice, which I really like

Sunny Valentina. I love it. I've spend 50 years spelling it, proving it, correcting people who don't hear it because they're expecting to hear a 'proper' name - Sally, Sonia, Jenny, Wendy (!) - and the frustration on school trips when my friends went home with keyrings with their names on; occasionally as a child I wished I had a normal name, but I wouldn't change it and I think it suits me.

That is a show stopper of a brilliant name

Alison is French and is a pet form of Alice but it seems a bit of a 1960s name to me.

I’m an 80’s baby named Hayley, I’ve always liked my name, but then I quite like the names of that era. I always liked Lauren. My son has a girl in his class named Alison and I thought it was really unusual as they’re only 10!

Well, yes, I do know that people are named for the place they were conceived. My point is that I am named after an obscure foreign town, not a famous place or holiday destination.
I bet lots of British people have heard of, say, Truro, Halifax, Chard. But they're probably not very well known abroad, at least to non-English speakers... Yet they wouldn't sound too silly as a kid's name.

Obvious name change for this, as I know I have a few friends on here (mostly with unremarkable names, as it happens).

So my name is Jody and I was born in 1973.

I'm fairly neutral about my name, it has good and bad points.

Good points -
1.It became super popular about 10 years after I was born, so people will assume I'm younger than I really am (although they probably think I had a really hard life!)
2.It's quick and easy to spell and has a nice sound.
3.It's well known, without being super popular.

Bad points -
1.It became super popular about 10 years after I was born, and was a little declassé at that time.

The most common spelling of it is Jodie, so others often mispell it.

All in all, it could be worse

I have a massively common name. Don't particularly like the name but definitely prefer that there are thousands of us. I like that I am ungoogleable and that it makes me quite anonymous. Of course for some people they would prefer the opposite. I am a private person though and prefer to merge in and be under the radar in life!
