Thoughts on Madelyn or Carlotta for a sister to Camilla

Francescarae · 25/04/2026 11:14

We are trying to have baby number 2 so I’m thinking of names, we have decided on our boys name.

we have a daughter called Camilla Marie
we call her “Millie” for short or sometimes “Millie Marie”

I have always loved longer traditional full names with cute ie nicknames

we have two choices

Madelyn Mae-nickname Maddie /Maddie Mae
Carlotta Grace- nickname Lottie /Lottie Grace

boys name already decided:

Oliver James - Nickname Ollie

let me know your thoughts x

I also don’t understand why you’d choose a name then call the child by the nickname.

I work in a school and when SATs come round, a lot of the children are surprised to discover they even have a different name to the one they are called.

I don’t like Madelyn because it looks like it should sound Made-alyn.

Calliopespa · 25/04/2026 15:05

Do you like Lucia to keep the Italian feel OP?

Camilla and Lucia could be Millie and Lucy, which are both sweet but neither too similar nor too saccharine.

I don't think you really need two Milly Marie/Maddy Mae type names, which are essentially hyphenated names, do you?

HugoThatway · 25/04/2026 14:46

Those are all stretches, @WhimsyWhim .

WhimsyWhim · 25/04/2026 14:20

What do you think of Antonia with the NN Annie, Julianna with the NN Annie, Alexandra with the NN Allie, or Scarlett with the NN Lettie? These seem very similar to what you want.

WhimsyWhim · 25/04/2026 14:10

Madelyn feels like a very American spelling of Madel(e)ine. Mae/May and Grace are very overused as middle names. I love Carlotta. It would be lovely paired with a different middle name.

JustGiveMeReason · 25/04/2026 14:06

RoseField1 · 25/04/2026 12:14

Madeleine spelt properly is lovely - Madeline will also do at a push but not your silly spelling

Mae as a middle name is shite
Carlotta is too similar to Camilla
Grace is also shite
Pick Madeleine and a better middle name...

Sums up everything I was going to say.

Francescarae · 25/04/2026 13:25

We like horses so Carlotta felt fitting due to Enid blyton

I love Carlotta - like a PP it reminds me of the Enid Blyton character.
It’s such a fab name though I think shortening it to Lottie ruins it.

I don’t like Madelyn or Madeleine at all.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 25/04/2026 13:11

I don’t understand why you pick a name and then call your child a shorter/different version of the name. Using a shorter/different version of a name isn’t a nickname. A nickname is a name that happens organically. Just choose the name you intend to use for your child.

Can't hear Madaleine without hearing Mccann but perhaps I'm in the minority now.

Edit to say I don't know any Madaleine's personally so perhaps that soon fades when you do.

Edited

Her name was/is Madeleine.

Why Carlotta, do you have Italian heritage?

No just think it’s not pretty, Camilla is an Italian name also

What's your point? OP didn't say she's pregnant in either thread. Bit pointless posting the same name again but hey. She's introduced a new bad name choice now 😆

Not pregnant but just exploring ideas for when we do have a second, everyone’s name preferences are different, it’s not pointless looking at options

Carlotta is great

HugoThatway · 25/04/2026 12:52

@RoseField1 , many of the replies will apply and some of the details won't have been mentioned on this thread.

Sibling for Camilla | Mumsnet

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/04/2026 12:35

Like Madeleine or Madeline. Dislike your spelling variant.

Dislike Carlotta. Like Charlotte (which can ne shortened to Lottie).

zxzx6576 · 25/04/2026 12:33

Although I agree with the above Maddie and Millie do sound a bit daft together.

zxzx6576 · 25/04/2026 12:32

I don’t understand why you would deliberately spell a name wrong? Madeline is lovely. Mae is generic and a bit pointless.

As stated Carlotta is too similar to Camilla, I’d just go for Charlotte if you like Lottie.

DinoDances · 25/04/2026 12:31

The girl names are both too close to your current daughter for me to be honest. Maddie and Millie are very similar, and Camilla and Carlotta. I would be tempted to go for Madeleine if it's only out of those 2 for a different official initial so it's less annoying for things like post (I have this problem with my dad).

Alternatives:
Josephine - Josie
Rosalind - Rosie
Harriet - Hattie
Georgina - Georgie

Followthesunshine · 25/04/2026 12:30

Madelyn Mae - spelt like this, is awful.

RoseField1 · 25/04/2026 12:28

I'm revising my view on madeleine anyway alongside Millie, Maddie is too similar. Pick a completely different name.

RoseField1 · 25/04/2026 12:28

I don't think there is any point sugar coating on the name threads! Nothing worse than people being polite to someone's face and secretly thinking their child's name is shite. And that's what happens IRL so the beauty of mumsnet is you can say what people are really thinking!
