They're popular because they're popular. It's just fashion.

Kids of today are unlikely to have a grandma called Ada. They might have a great-great-grandmother called it. It dropped out of the top 100 in the 1920s.

I love all three!

I probably wouldn’t choose Nia as, while I like it, I HATE Mia. I think it’s one of the ugliest sounds and I worry Nia would be mistaken as Mia.

Nina was a name we were considering.

Also, as others say, Ada and Romy are popular but that’s because they are nice names! I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

Interesting choices of grandparent names. Assuming grandparents are in their 60s the popular names would be Sharon, Tracey, Debbie, Karen, Beverly, Gary, Simon ... more than the names you quote

Not really an 'interesting choice', just a very small snapshot of names of people who I know who have recently become grandparents actually. There are definitely people with those names in their 60s (or older), and there are definitely people who become grandparents in their 50s or even 40s. Likewise, the names you have provided could easily be 'new grandparent' names too. The male names, in particular, are exactly the same style as mine.

My point still stands, whether we use my names or your names. Kids of today are unlikely to have a grandma called Ada. They will see a totally different set of names as being old-fashioned. The names of their actual grandparents.

I dislike Nia. I like the sound of it but I'm Irish and it's the Irish word for nephew, the way nephew is masculine and Nia is used as a girls name always messes with my brain so that's why I don't like it. So if that doesn't bother you, then it is a nice sounding name.

I adore the name Ada. It has become quite popular here recently (so has Èala pronounced Ale-ah, close to Ada). It's a beautiful name.

Not a fan of Romy. I dont like how it sounds or looks, just cant get on board with it. I dont know why!

Romy is beautiful and a good international name. Makes me think of Romy and Michele or Romy Schneider! I think Ada is nice enough and I know one who is lovely, but it has become very popular. I’m afraid I dislike Nia.

I love Nia, but I do have a very lovely Welsh friend in her 50s called Nia. Ada is OK, don't really like Romy.

Ada = Peaky Blinders fan for a parent, better than Khaleesi but not by much
Romy = Romy and Michelle movie, very much a 90’s name.
Nia, can’t say I’ve heard it before.

I love the name Nia, have known a fair few around my own age over the years (late 30’s now).

I like Ada and know one in her teens who is an absolutely wonderful human being, which may well influence how I view the name overall.

Can’t stand Romy.

Maybe not if they had been born in the 80s and were a teenager in the late 90s/early 00s, because they would have stood out for having an old-fashioned name at the time.

Adas born now are in fashion. Whereas a teenager called Jennifer, Claire or Michelle would be considered to have an old fashioned name these days. Times change, fashions change. You may not like the current fashion, and that's your prerogative, but the comment about she won't thank you when she's a teenager is a bit ridiculous given that she'll be a teenager in a class with peers called Elsie, Florence, Mabel, Ivy, Stanley, Arthur etc. They'll all see their names as normal for their age group. Their grandparents will have names like Andy, Louise, Steve and Sarah. Those names will feel 'old' to them. It's all relative.

Ada is originally short for Adelaide after Queen Adelaide. Or you could use Adeline. Much nicer to have the full name. Nia? Not for me. Romy I really like. I’d put it with Adelaide!

Def Ada!! It's lovely. Pronounced Aid-ah where I am from. Not 'duh' sound. Yes its old school, which is basically all the names at the moment, but beautiful and suits all ages and professions IMO. Top 50 in the UK so it is obviously well liked, and I'd go by that rather than those commenting on mumsnet. Not so fond of Nia or Romy as dont think they would age well.

Nia is a Welsh name. It's the Welsh equivalent of Niamh.

All Nia's I know are over the age of 20 now. There are lots of them in the 50-65 age group.

I really like it but the Mia trend puts me off it for now and as pp I know too many to use it. There were at least 2 in my class at school, it was the name of two of my friends at school etc.

Sounds like first aider. I can't see any appeal in it or Ava.

I really don't like Rosemarie. It looks like a twee spelling of Rosemary, which is a boring name.

I don't like Mia because it is overused and sounds like mere.

Rosemarie is the traditional French and German spelling. I think it's prettier.
