The list of groups at our under-12s football club has just been released...there are girls named Valerie, Clara, Marjorie, Colina and Jocelyn, with multiple Lucys and Elsies, and there are boys named Jeremy, Solomon, Cliff, Kevin and Kenny. I don't think any name is ever gone for good...

I remember when the Walton sextuplets were born in Liverpool (Kate, Sarah, Jennifer, Lucy, Hannah and Ruth) and my mum going, 'oh, what lovely simple sensible names!' I think they may have set a trend for 80s and 90s girls, but you hardly hear Ruth, Sarah or Jenny now.

(Just in shock when I realise that those tiny baby girls are now in their mid-forties...)😱

I was born 1960 and a Susan. So many of us at school. I do not know any Susan's under 60.

Veronica has been used in a recent teen drama (Riverdale based on the Archie comics, played by Camila Mendes) and has been consistently in the top 1000 since 1996. I think it's a great name, and popular with mainland European migrants too (as Weronika, people will switch to Veronica in next generations/the longer they've lived here). Same for Valentina.

Gay, Gayle and Gaynor would need a massive change in how gay people describe themselves, though I suppose it's only been used like that since the 1960s.

Or Gaylord as a boy's name - absolutely unimaginable now.

Well, me neither, but I do often wonder at the mentality on name threads, with people who are presumably adults, with the IQ necessary to be able to read and write and have access to the internet, posting stuff like 'Lana is 'anal' backwards!' like it's some kind of schoolyard gotcha.

I think most names will cycle unless there becomes a reason not to.

So, in the UK:
Fanny, Gay, Chastity, Minnie, Karen are probably out for good.

In the USA apparently Jemima is never used because it's seen as racist (don't know the whys and wherefores) But I think it's a beautiful name and would definitely consider it here - as long as I was sure I wouldn't move to the US.

Aunt Jemima was a long-lived brand of US pancake mix with a 'Mammy' stereotype character on the packaging and advertising. I think they only retired the branding in the last 20 years or so.
