Thoughts on Delilah for a sister to Matilda?

I’m pregnant with my second girl, I already have a Matilda and love the name Delilah for this baby, but the more I research it the more I’m put off it 🙈 I wasn’t aware of the biblical reference until now even though I was brought up in a Christian household. What does everyone else think of this name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Like I say, tedious people who think they are the first ones to make the joke.

I wonder if they approach people at bus stops to announce ‘you wait - two will come at once!’

NamingNoNames · 10/04/2026 15:04

no child would be called ruby, or Caroline, or Alice, or Layla.
Many posters have used songs as a reason to not use names.

Waltzing Matilda 🎶Waltzing Matilda 🎶

I can understand wanting to name your child Matilda, which is a lovely name. But why, why, why, Delilah?

My my my 😂

buttercupdaisyyellow · 10/04/2026 14:59

The song thing is annoying as it’s tedious people who think they are the first person to sing a song at you, but on that logic no child would be called ruby, or Caroline, or Alice, or Layla.

I am not keen on Delilah but it’s just personal taste, there’s nothing wrong with it. I like Matilda though.

Did he do a song with someone’s name in it?

Tom Jones? Yes.

Frankie - several.

NamingNoNames · 10/04/2026 14:23

She won’t because children her age won’t know who Tom Jones is.
Just like we don't know who Frank Sinatra was.

DramaAlpaca · 10/04/2026 14:20

I really like Delilah, but I have to say I wouldn't use it for all the reasons above.

She'll have people singing the Tom Jones song at her all her life.

How about Delia? Similar sound but not the same connotation.

She won’t because children her age won’t know who Tom Jones is.

There are a couple of songs with my name in them and the only person to have ever sung them maybe a handful of times is my DM.

Ipollita · 10/04/2026 14:17

I don’t love it. What about Matilda and

Adeline
Posey
Elowyn
Juliette
Sylvie
Elena
Imogen
Athena
Colette

I wouldn’t pick Delilah. It has so much cultural resonance - in a bad way. She features heavily in art and literature. The name also doesn’t go with Matilda at all - if that bothers you

LassiKopiano24 · 10/04/2026 14:07

Delilah is nice, what about Dahlia?

Foxytights · 10/04/2026 14:06

I don’t like Delilah, sorry.
I don’t like Delia either but I do like Celia. Or Cecelia? Or Cecily?
Jemima was a good suggestion someone made, it has a similar vibe to Delilah but is a more pleasant sound. Same goes for Tabitha.
Matilda and Tabitha sound perfect together imo.

RubyMentor · 10/04/2026 13:58

I like it, I know a Delilah and she’s cute

Riapia · 10/04/2026 13:49

Love it.
Also Gloria.

It’s a beautiful name.

It isn't (why why why and Biblical ref.) and there are lots of Lila/Lyla/Lyra/Isla names that sound very close to it.

BoleynMemories13 · 10/04/2026 13:21

The biblical connotations would put me off too. I always think of the line in Friends, when Ross announces to everyone that their newborn daughter is called Isabella and a hormonal Rachel tears up and says "no that's not her name". When asked by the others what other names they were considering, Ross says 'Delilah' and Rachel wails "oh great, suddenly she sounds like a biblical wh*re ". Yeah, it's not a great reference.

Lyla is lovely as a stand alone name and sounds nice with Matilda. I love the suggestion of Eliza too. Another great match with Matilda.

NamingNoNames · 10/04/2026 13:03

Why why why. Makes me think of the junkie in This Life.

How about Jessica, Jemima or Tabitha?

Pernicketywishes · 10/04/2026 12:59

I’ve known two Delilahs - one known as Dilly and the other Lilah. I think it’s a very pretty name.

marcyhermit · 10/04/2026 12:52

Delilah's very pretty but it is rising in popularity, maybe not to Matilda levels but I know lots of Delilahs and Lilas.

HelenaWilson · 10/04/2026 12:44

But why, why, why, Delilah?

😁😁😁😁😁

mummysmagicmedicine · 10/04/2026 12:11

I love Matilda and Delilah as a sibset I think they fit beautifully.

Many congratulations!
