Is Sebastian overdone? What does it bring to mind?

My partner is Sébastien (half French) he finds it gets misspelled a lot, but I just love it. He’s almost exclusively called Seb by his friends.

It just instantly makes me think of the "overheard in Waitrose" stories

coolcahuna · 27/03/2026 16:54

I absolutely love this name

SuperMarioToadPrincessPeach · 27/03/2026 16:50

I know two.

I don’t like Sebastian - it sounds pompous and reminds me of sebaceous and bastard.

The nicknames Seb, Sebby or Basty are not great either.

I knew a couple growing up and didn't mind it, but it has definitely changed vibe from an unusual name, probably seen as a bit posh, to a name "doing the rounds" and I believe has been popularised by Sebastian Vettel.

It definitely isn't the slightly posh, fairly unusual name it once was. I also really don't like Seb or Bass or Bastian.

I went to school with a Sebastian who was always known as Bassy. His poor mum used to say “it’s Sebastian actually” but she was the only person I heard say his proper name.

RoyalPenguin · 27/03/2026 14:05

I like Sebastian a lot.

Tonissister · 27/03/2026 14:02

It's a good, classic name. I like it. And Seb is very cute for a younger boy.

bananabug · 27/03/2026 14:01

I really like the name Sebastian.

I only know one Sebastian currently. I think of the red crab and then a boy I was friends with about 30 years ago
