Middle name recommendations

devon9 · 25/03/2026 09:17

Looking for recommendations for a middle name for my baby girl. Her name is Sylvia.
I like Sylvia Lynn (my middle name)
Her dad likes Sylvia Marie or Sylvia Jordan.
I personally feel Jordan is more masculine than what we are going for and Marie is his moms middle name and we agree we will never hear the end of it that we “named her after ME” (iykyk)
Looking for something feminine, don’t have a preference on length of name, and her last name will be Middleton. TYIA

Why is it always Marie? I can’t find the meme but I’m Catholic and I was trying to make up for not picking a Saints name for a first name, and it sounds nice.
After using it as a middle name I was in a room full of relatives and found out about 6 had the same middle name 🙈

I know someone called Claire . . . she was one of 5 Claire's in her year at school and was the only one who wasn't Claire Louise

Second names seem to go in fashions as much, if not more so, than first names

Most of my DM's contemporaries (1920's/30's) had Mary, Jean or Anne as a 1st name

Many of my schoolfriends (1960's) had Jane as a 2nd name

We currently have Edith & several Grace's amongst the 2nd names for younger members of my family and I've heard of quite a few with May or Rose as a second name recently

But, across the generations, Joy is the most common 2nd name in my family. We only have one Marie (born 1970's)

Stick with Lynne

WhatAPavalova · 26/03/2026 17:24

Sorry OP my message above was no help

I think reading out the whole name together, the shorter names sound better.

I know pp mentioned it but what about Rose or May, I think Lynn is great too.

For me I picked a name of significance to us, as middle names don’t get said much.

Not Marie. There’s a meme going around about why people have middle names and why is it always Marie. When I thought about it, I realised I know so many people with Marie as a middle name - me included!

Of all the suggestions here, to me, Sylvia Rose has a really pleasing feel to it.

Giraffehaver · 25/03/2026 22:28

None of them work well,Lynn is by far the worst when teamed with the surname Sylvia is an old traditional name so you need something old and traditional.

HugoThatway · 25/03/2026 16:19

Jayne is awful and Rose is so overused

Calliopespa · 25/03/2026 16:13

LostThestral · 25/03/2026 16:06

Sylvia Jayne
Sylvia Mary
Sylvia Ruth
Sylvia Louise
Sylvia Camille
Sylvia Rose

As ever, Rose or Jayne sounds best.

@user1492757084 , did you see what the surname is?

It was a joke I think.

Or would you consider joining Marie & Lynn together ~ Sylvia Marilyn Middleton?

I love this suggestion!

I think it's rather nice if MIL feels included, but this way you can both be.

Jordan is nothing short of appalling with Sylvia. They just don't go. What is he thinking? Is this a homage to Katie Price?

Kate

Easterbunnyishotandcross · 25/03/2026 11:29

Sylvia Jayne

MinPinSins · 25/03/2026 11:27

If she's getting dad's surname, I think it's fair enough to have her middle name after you!

If not, I agree, Marie is dull and Jordan sounds pretty masculine. I think Josephine or Eliza would both sound good.
