Of course we'll end up with the name we love but it is helpful/interesting to see whether there's an overwhelming majority preference!

really depends where you live. Around these parts they would be quite usual names as our community is very diverse.

Btw I prefer Julius!

HugoThatway · 18/03/2026 14:00

Gussie Gusset or Jules?

Neither of them, @SharpGoldWriter .

senua · 18/03/2026 13:59

I'm not keen on Julius - it's a trade name for a dog harness.

Calliopespa · 18/03/2026 13:55

Sashya · 18/03/2026 12:47

None. And especially if you have a regular sounding English last name - these names don't work with Anglo-Saxon names at all. And if you have a fairy common English names - they sound terribly pretentious, and trying really hard.
Julius Smith ...? Augustus Williams....? Etc.

Would kids make fun of these names? Of couse. Caesar salad and Augustus Gloop, etc.

I am in - don't do it to your child - camp.

What about Augustus John? That sounds fine ...

Calliopespa · 18/03/2026 13:53

I marginally prefer Augustus, but both are fine. Whyever not?

Augustus is an Emperor; Angus is a breed of cow.

Your poll is defective. There is no option for 'please don't do that to a child'.

Laugh emoji needs bringing back - please! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

stargirl27 · 18/03/2026 12:35

Both are nice, my preference would be Augustus. Julian is a good option too, a little more 'mainstream' than Julius if that's something you care about.

Mumofyellows · 18/03/2026 12:34

Both names are bloody awful.

MrTwisterHasABlister · 18/03/2026 12:34

I really love Augustus and Gus. I know a couple too. Great name.

Julius is a little more ‘meh’ to me.

OccasionalHope · 18/03/2026 12:31

Julius is lovely,

Not so keen on Augustus as it has a bit of a hard sound,

MinPinSins · 18/03/2026 12:11

Julius is great! Fortunately children are lot less dick ish than most Mumsnetters - why would Julian be completely normal, but Julius a thing of ridicule? And what is wrong with sharing your name with an emperor?

I find Augustus a bit long and frilly for my liking - but do love the nickname Gus.

user2848502016 · 18/03/2026 11:14

Augustus, mostly because there are better nickname options (August, Gus).
Julius could be Jules I suppose which is quite nice.

People are appallingly rude on here.

Every name doesn’t to be a Theo, Leo, Harry or Jack.

No one of Luke bat an eyelid at a name like this where I live. And the kids certainly wouldn’t care.

Do you mind sharing in what area you are? Because that’s how I feel, too - no one would hesitate or question either where we live!

Well August is quite popular these days so I’d probably take that into consideration. Will people mistake Augustus for August? Will Augustus want to go by August as he gets older so it will be a popular, trendy and perhaps dated name?

So … I’d probably pick Julius. But actually I like Julian better, as someone else suggested.

Orphlids · 18/03/2026 09:02

I like both, and would be thrilled to meet either a little Augustus, or a Julius. But I voted for Augustus, because… well, it’s just fantastic. I’d assume the parents were interesting and imaginative, and most likely the little boy would be the same.

ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs · 18/03/2026 08:22

August is nice. Augustus is too much.

BaronessBomburst · 18/03/2026 08:19

I prefer Augustus as there's a slightly smaller chance that people will automatically plonk Caeser on the end. A very small chance though. Not much in it.

Firebird83 · 18/03/2026 08:17

Augustus makes me think of Augustus Gloop and I don’t like the nn Gus (makes me think of gust and gusset!)

Also August is getting popular so it will blend in with that.

Julius is much better!

Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop
The great big greedy nincompoop

agree Marcus is better!

Agree.

But if you must Julius.

(Mind you, names like Hector are practically mainstream now so maybe Augustus will be one day too).

PropitiousJump · 18/03/2026 07:58

Julius is a brilliant name.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 18/03/2026 07:57

Can't vote, both options should ridiculously pretentious.

GideonSmideon · 18/03/2026 07:53

Neither, both will be pompous twits. Augustus on the plumper side. Will grow up to be ruddy cheeked and insufferable.
