Of course we'll end up with the name we love but it is helpful/interesting to see whether there's an overwhelming majority preference!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
KaleidoscopeSmile · 18/03/2026 16:56

I love the implication from the more recent posters that only the provincials (anyone outside London) will find these names not to their taste.

Bellybellas · 18/03/2026 15:37

Agreed! Here in our part of Greater London these names are absolutely normal!

And much more interesting and memorable than Jack, Harry or Theo (yawn)!!

Op, I like them both but prefer Julius!

Agree.

I don't like made-up "neologism" type names, and I'm not a great fan of nn as full names, like Ellie or Ned, but these are proper names - and have been for centuries.

People are appallingly rude on here.

Every name doesn’t to be a Theo, Leo, Harry or Jack.

No one of Luke bat an eyelid at a name like this where I live. And the kids certainly wouldn’t care.

veggietabless · 18/03/2026 15:33

Julius because Augustus Gloop. Augustus is also a huge mouthful.

schnubbins · 18/03/2026 15:10

I think Julius is great .My friend has a son called Julius and he is a smashing young man . Julian is lovely too.

CelticSilver · 18/03/2026 15:05

I voted Julius but I prefer Julian. Augustus is too gloopy.

Augustus, mostly because there are better nickname options (August, Gus).
Julius could be Jules I suppose which is quite nice.

Ahhh I do quite like the nickname gus actually! I was going to say neither too, and my children are in private so I’ve heard them all 😆 but yes, Augustus (Gus) if you must choose one!

Calliopespa · 18/03/2026 14:57

NobodysChildNow · 18/03/2026 04:11

Marcus Aurelius is a fabulous name @MrsTerryPratchett

I like both Marcus (prefer Marco) and Aurelius.

I think together becomes way too much! The equivalent would be Julius Caesar.

I also quite like Tiberius and Octavian!

Summer19 · 18/03/2026 14:54

Aengus is a nicer alternative to Augustus

LlynTegid · 18/03/2026 14:54

This poll should have been posted on the 15th of March.

mixingplaydoh · 18/03/2026 14:53

I love Julius. And Marcus, and Maximus. I’m not keen on Augustus, partly because I don’t like how “gus” sounds in some accents.

sittingonabeach · 18/03/2026 14:53

Neither

Starlight7080 · 18/03/2026 14:52

This must be a joke...

HugoThatway · 18/03/2026 14:49

Spartacus?

Weeelokthen · 18/03/2026 14:47

Are you a huge Roman emperor fan op?

EmpressaurusKitty · 18/03/2026 14:42

They’re both better than Caligula.

Augie & Gus are both awful though so I’d pick Julius.

Calliopespa · 18/03/2026 14:39

99bottlesofkombucha · 18/03/2026 14:24

Exactly. I love my little Nebuchadnezzar.

Not many of them though.

But history has seen plenty of Augustuses. Lots of baronets, politicians and, bizarrely, cricketers. Also a good arty/engineering cohort with Pugin and John and Thomas.

I like it.

99bottlesofkombucha · 18/03/2026 14:24

MinPinSins · 18/03/2026 12:11

Julius is great! Fortunately children are lot less dick ish than most Mumsnetters - why would Julian be completely normal, but Julius a thing of ridicule? And what is wrong with sharing your name with an emperor?

I find Augustus a bit long and frilly for my liking - but do love the nickname Gus.

Exactly. I love my little Nebuchadnezzar.

AgentPidge · 18/03/2026 14:16

I've voted Julius, but I do love the nn Gus. So maybe Augustus helpful

BewleyBear · 18/03/2026 14:15

I’m thinking months of the year/roman emperors. Are there any other choices? Sorry but to be honest they’re pretty much the same.

RudolphRNR · 18/03/2026 14:15

If you truly equally like both names then I find it’s sometimes helpful to think about whether you equally like the likely nicknames.

How do you feel about Augie/Gus and Jules/Jude?

GingerBeverage · 18/03/2026 14:14

Prefer Augusten, like the author.

HugoThatway · 18/03/2026 14:13

Calliopespa · 18/03/2026 13:55

What about Augustus John? That sounds fine ...

He was hugely talented and had friends with names like Virginia. OP's baby will probably be quite average and friends with names like Noah and Theo.

AgentPidge · 18/03/2026 14:06

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/03/2026 04:01

Marcus Aurelius. Commit!

You beat me to it! Awesome name. Depending on the surname, of course. Marcus Aurelius Clatworthy doesn't sound great. But if it's Hetherington-Smythe, go for it!

Calliopespa · 18/03/2026 14:03

senua · 18/03/2026 13:59

I'm not keen on Julius - it's a trade name for a dog harness.

Really???

The low brow associations people bring to the table.

Julius effected one of the greatest ever territorial expansions in history, while Augustus initiated the Pax Romana, yet all people can think of is a Roald Dahl character and a dog harness.
