What impressions do you have of the baby name Julius?

(Me again! We're really struggling with this upcoming baby's name! Thanks in advance!)
What does the name Julius bring to mind? We prefer it to Julian as it's less common and feels a bit stronger to me.

Julian, maybe a bit - and yes to the Famous Five reference. He was such a drip.

But Julius was a dictator and regarded by some as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The name Caesar later became both Tsar and Kaiser. Julius belongs in the same bag as Alexander, Octavian and Augustus - none of which are remotely effeminate in association for me. I mean what would sound masculine? Bruno maybe? Or Rex, I guess.

I dislike Julian but quite like Julius - Michael Boatman in The Good Fight is what comes to my mind though, so slightly swayed by that.

I like it. The only one I knew, in my student days, was incredibly good-looking and kind.

I don’t care for Julian, unless for a girl— male Julians remind me unfairly of pompous, responsible Julian in the Famous Five, who had reactionary ideas about girls liking to make beds out of heather in caves while the boys had adventures.

Julian seems to be trendy and of-the-moment right now which is one reason we lean toward the more classic version.

I work in schools and childcare settings and have only heard of one Julian in the past 10 years. There was one in my school year (I am 60).

It may be experiencing a comeback, but I think it’s a relatively minor one.

I know a young man called Julius who is lovely. When he was named as a baby I was a bit, eh? Now I love it. To be clear though he's Swedish so maybe that's made it easier?

I hsve an unusal name so tend to like them. Julius would be a name I would be embarrassed to say as my name.

I'm a Roman history fan, so I went straight to Julius Caesar. I quite like it, though, and there are certainly worse Romans to share a name with. It isn't a name I would do a double-take at or have negative associations with if I came across it on a list, so in that respect, if you like it, it is a great name to use.

Depending on your age, I think of Arnold Schwarzeneggers character from the film Twins, but I'm in my 40s, I guess the younger generations won't make the connection. That aside I'm not really keen on the name but then it's not my dc so each to their own.

I prefer the sound of Cassius but not the meaning. Julius doesn't sound strong to me. It sounds a bit wet

I know the lovliest Julius, can't say enough nice things about him (just as a counter point to all the "arrogant" / "pompous" comments previously). He's Swedish, perhaps a more common name there. It's a big name for a small kid I guess but people end up settling into their names don't they? My only exception to this is people who name their kids random words rather than proper names like Apple Martin.

My only advise about naming kids is make sure you like it. I really don't like my youngest child's name, it was a panic pick and I'm still annoyed 4 and a half years later.

Reminds me of the baby in the lovely children’s book, “Julius, the Baby of the World”. I like it!
