My friend is called Rosie and I only found out at her wedding that it is short for Rosemary, which I think is a lovely name!

I'm 70 and have known lots of girls called Rosemary. Many of them used Rosie for short.

Eglantine makes me think of Shakespeare. Some kind of flower? Mentioned in A Midsummer Night's Dream, I think. I think it's a beautiful name - and definitely unusual.

Ophelia is another Shakespearean name I find gorgeous

Persephone, its just a beautiful name.

I met a Boudicca once, and she was as bad ass as you'd imagine.

Most unique and most beautiful aren't the same thing though - the most unique name can be unbeautiful by common standards. My grandmother's middle name was Eglantine - fairly unique in the world now, but beautiful to most people? Probably not! So which one do you want?

Aiofe.
I love the sound of the name and the feel of the sound in my mouth, if you see what I mean.

wheredidtheteago · 02/03/2026 15:55

I love Eleri. Love how it looks love how it’s spelt, I’ve only met one and she was the epitome of her name. Whimsical, soft and lovely.

harriethoyle · 02/03/2026 15:51

I love Persephone although it's a very sad story. Ditto Ophelia! You couldn't give that doom and gloom to a child..!

I think these common ones are beautiful:

Emily
Elizabeth
Olivia
Alexander

When I was very young I called my dolls Helen and Heather.

Best friend in primary school loved her name, Rebecca. She was named after the book - we weren't aware of the character's personality back then!

I love the name Adeline. Also Aurora. Clearly I have a thing for names beginning with A.

My Great Grandma was called Adeline. Adeline Elizabeth. I also love the varients Adelina and Adelia.

Iphigenia - a sad story but a very beautiful name

StormyLandCloud · 02/03/2026 15:27

I know someone called Barley which I always thought was a wonderful name. I like illiana too, and Genevieve. I used to adore Paloma but it’s become more popular so I’ve started to go off of it. valentina is lovely, but I don’t like the ‘tina’ short version

I met a Viviana. Her family was Italian. I think it’s a beautiful name.

Sometimes it’s not the sound but the look of a name.
I know Isola means island in Italian but I think it looks beautiful.
I also like the look of Kerala, a place name.
Eloise is a lovely sounding name.
