Hello,

Expecting our first baby in a few weeks and would love suggestions for names. Short list so far is:

Boys -

Wilfred (Wilf) - My top one but partner isn't as keen
Edward
William
James

Girls -

Harriet - my partner not too sure again
Georgina (Georgie or GiGi)
Alice
Sophie
Audrey
Violet (love this name but partner has vetoed it but just so you have a sense of names that I like)

We like quite traditional names, not fussed about popularity. Baby's surname will begin with an L and is two syllables and we are not keen on alliterarion (which is a shame as Laurence nn Laurie is a name I have always loved). Middle name for a boy will be Timothy. For a girl, undecided but maybe Eve, Dorothy or Diane depending on which first name we go for (all meaningful to us).

Thank you!!

I like Edward and James.

loislovesstewie · 26/02/2026 17:50

Honestly? James and Sophie are lovely.
The rest are awful.

NamingNoNames · 26/02/2026 17:42

It's a nice name. I think the reason I don't know any young ones is regional, @iwasgonnasay . I know a lot of Jacks and Harrys.

amy480 · 26/02/2026 17:42

All really nice names but my faves are James (would have been on my list if we didn’t have family member with the name + same surname) and Alice (again, on my list if it wasn’t for another close member having the name!!) second choices would be William and Sophie.

@CeciliaMars , the stats show otherwise. I don't believe that you have taught a 'million boys called Harry , Noah, Josh, Max, Theo, Henry, Thomas etc.'

James is a classic name, as is Thomas, and I know ones of all ages. The others weren't popular when I was born so seem more popular.

James seems overused as a boy's middle name.

Oliver has been a top 10 name since 2002 but I don't know a single Oliver younger than 35.

Mine is Oliver, as are 3 or 4 we know!

NamingNoNames · 26/02/2026 17:30

@CeciliaMars , ok then. You really have taught a 'million boys called Harry , Noah, Josh, Max, Theo, Henry, Thomas etc.'

Such a weird conversation - why would I lie about that? Think what you like - have a good evening.

James isn't underused Baby name explorer, @CeciliaMars .I agree that it's lovely. Dorothy is fab but Marigold is definitely not.

Well I’m a teacher in the south east and in the last 12 years, I’ve only taught 2 James! A million boys called Harry , Noah, Josh, Max, Theo, Henry, Thomas etc. so I see it as underused.

James is lovely and underused.
Dorothy also fab. I like Marigold too!

ArcticSkua · 26/02/2026 04:42

Nice names. My favourites are William and Sophie.

mathanxiety · 26/02/2026 04:32

For a girl, I think Diane would be the best middle name.

Georgina Diane would be stunning.
I also like Audrey Diane.

For a boy, I think William L . . . brings too many Ls too close together.

James Timothy L . . . . would be very nice.
Edward Timothy is a little clunky.

Suggestions -
Elspeth Eve
Charlotte Eve
Josephine Dorothy

Hugo Timothy
Charles Timothy
George Timothy

Nice list, I like Edward nn Ned and you can’t go wrong with William.

How about Alexander/Alexandra or Elizabeth?

I once knew a little girl called Aubrey which I thought was sweet. A bit softer than Audrey.

Pettenell · 25/02/2026 23:45

I love all the names on your lists, and feel you can't go wrong with any of them! My favourites, though very hard to choose, are possibly Wilfred /Wilf and Georgina.

Norastroud · 25/02/2026 21:31

Congratulations!
from your list my favourites are Edward Timothy nn Ned and Harriet Dorothy nn Hattie.

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/02/2026 20:43

Wilfred (Wilf) - not overly keen on.Wilfred but Wilf / Wilfie is a gorgrous nn. I also like Walt which is a similar feel

Edward - lovely but not keen on Ed / Eddie which i kmagine it would get shortened too

William - nice but a bit dull. I like the shortening Liam though

James - lovely classic that you dont hear as much these days. The youngest James i know is 9

Harriet - love Harriet nn Hattie. It reminds me of Harriet the spy

Georgina (Georgie or GiGi) prefer Georgia. I like Georgie but not Gigi

Alice - lovely classic

Sophie - nice just a bit dull

Audrey - ok. Nice enough

Violet - not a fan, i prefer Viola

Sazzles169 · 25/02/2026 20:28

Georgia and Helena are similar to your girls list!
