I don’t think the name Fox is as bad as it’s being made out.

hopefully OP s DD will find a middle name she likes as much as a first name

@MrsBadEnoch Perhaps you haven’t read the whole thread, the OP has very clearly given her opinion on the name here and said she has to her daughter too.

i have read OP's posts. Given the replies I don't think her comment was out -of-order.

I doubt that OP's DD gives two fox, for fox sake.

Lol. All the X-files fans rushing to the comments. This was probably in my baby names list as a teen tbf.

Ideally she should go for just a classic boys name, then Fox has some options when he gets older. David perhaps 😉

Although they did call him ‘spooky’ Mulder and there are a lot of Caspers’ around at the moment!

Alex, Eugene, Victor, Walter, Roland, Duane, Barry

All suitably spooky 😀

The issue is clear - the jokey names are not “helpful” but this child will face them all his life! How awful to do this to your child. The op should really talk to her Dd about this. Hopefully the middle name will be used! Poor child.

foggyday90 · 14/02/2026 08:52

I quite like Fox. I’d go with a longer classic middle name, like

Fox William
Fox Benjamin
Fox Nathaniel
Fox Theodore

I just find it so selfish to give children ridiculous names. Change your name to fox yourself if uou think it’s cool. Poor child.

This is OP’s Grandchild’s name. Not her choice. She’s asking for thoughts on middle names that mitigate the choice of first name.

LlynTegid · 14/02/2026 08:43

My opinion is that a middle name should remember or honour someone in the family, say a loved grandparent who is no longer with us. Also think if it could be used instead of a first name.

As for the first name, it is cruel and I hope your DD can be persuaded to see sense.

MrsBadEnoch · 14/02/2026 08:41

Trott-Oscar

IveStillNotGotThisFiguredOut · 14/02/2026 08:41

I’d pick a family name, something “normal” or ordinary in case Fox wants to use that when he’s older.

brightnails · 14/02/2026 08:41

Mulder

MrsBadEnoch · 14/02/2026 08:40

@RudolphRNR , OP hasn't particularly given much opinion on the name so your "But if she hasn’t asked, keep your beak out!" is uncalled for.

Strawberrydelight78 · 14/02/2026 08:37

Fox Trot

Oh I wouldn't worry about it too much OP. I called my son an uncommon name and had no end of raised eyebrows.
Right from baby group we came across all sorts of (in my opinion) strange names plus we live in a very multi-cultural area so there were those difficult to pronounce names too.
I think all babies grow into their names and very soon you'll be glad he's named something fairly unique. Embrace the name with your DD.

They don’t though, do they? I have met adults with names that very much don’t suit them. That’s the problem with very evocative nanes. The parent is projecting onto their child the sort of person they think they will be. And they may not turn out to be that person.

boobaaaa · 14/02/2026 08:12

I like someone’s idea of ‘Fox Alexander’.

I actually went to a kids party a couple of years back & there was a ‘Fox’ there as well.

At first I thought how ridiculous, but after a few minutes I actually quite liked it. It’s a strong name.

Sake?

Show your daughter this reply and tell him he is going to go through school and life with this joke constantly being made.

Poor kid.

He better be a physically big, confident and popular kid. Cos if there is anything about him that makes him a bully magnet, that name is going to seal the deal.

Unless she sends him to a Steiner school. She may need to do that.

I considered a similar unusual name for my first. The best advice I got was fron MN when someone said , the names ahe thought sounded cute when pregnant, just seemed ridiculous with a real live child’. I agree. I can’t tell you how glad I am now that didn’t pick such a name for him. Often throughout his childhood I have looked at him and thought how ridiculous the name would be on him. He has had bouts of low level bullying and they probably would have stuck as long term or higher level bullying if I’d given him a daft name as an extra stick to beat him with. .

Mcdhotchoc · 14/02/2026 07:13

Agree it should be a long one, like Alexander.

Mulledjuice · 14/02/2026 06:56

Jonathan
James

Zapx · 14/02/2026 05:50

I’d really avoid an ‘A’ name for all the reasons above. I might try for a ‘J’ name and hope he wants to be called ‘JJ’ or by just his middle name. Other than that I think I might talk at length about how much I LOVE the name Fox… in the hope she’ll change her mind. I’d be most worried about him ending up with the pet/nickname of Foxy…

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/02/2026 04:09

Fox Alexander Joseph.

Fox Patrick Joseph

Fox William Joseph

colachive · 14/02/2026 03:48

& Hounds?

roshi42 · 14/02/2026 03:46

Fox is a great name! I think Fox Joseph sounds good all by itself. Does he need a middle name? Tbh there are so many options… I think it just has to be another name she loves or something with some meaning - a family name or similar. There isn’t a middle name that immediately sounds like a natural suggestion to me. I would say be careful about initials… I’m not sure about FAJ. Or FOJ, FIJ or FUJ tbh. Maybe avoid a vowel middle name!

xOlive · 14/02/2026 03:38

Do not go with an “A” middle name for the love of god.
Initials would be FAJ.
His mates will be shouting show us ya FAJ at him throughout high school.
Hairy FAJ.
Smelly FAJ.
Don’t do it.
