Good morning all,

What are your opinions on the name Forrest for a boy?
Both me and DP really like it.
We have two girls already with uncommon but pretty names.

Now, I imagine those who prefer the traditional “George/Oliver/Thomas” names are going to think WTF are we thinking but for those of you who appreciate a more unusual/less common name, is Forrest too out there?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

She hasn’t watched it, but says she’s heard her dad talk about it because they got him a classic movie scratch-off poster for his birthday.

That’s a cool present!
I hope Titanic’s on the list!

I’m shocked she’s been allowed to watch it or been made aware of it at 9, the films rated 12A in the UK!
My 8 year-old wouldn’t have a clue.

My 5 yesr old loves Forest Gump

Westfacing · 12/02/2026 11:01

Why would you spell it with two Rs? That will surely be forever associated with Gump.

Names like Willow, Ocean, Sage etc., are all lovely 'nature' names as would be Forest with one R!

stickydough · 12/02/2026 11:00

I agree you should watch the film. He’s a lovely character but then you will know what everyone who’s watched its associations will be. It’s a classic film so it’s not accurate to think future generations won’t watch it. If you understand this and are cool with it then crack on!

cramptramp · 12/02/2026 11:00

Gump. Obviously.

Even if not at primary school, it will be secondary school then. It’s rated 15 i think but most people have watched it younger.

The film being made a long time ago doesn’t matter. Kids nowadays will still watch stuff like Mary Poppins.

Very true, can’t beat a bit of Mary Poppins.

I think the issue seems to be there’s only one famous Forrest from what I can tell.
For example, how many baby boys have been called Edward? Despite there being several serial killers called Edward/Ed.
Or if I’d have picked Thomas, nobody would say “oh like Thomas the Tank Engine” because it’s such a commonly used name.

Whereas if you called you son Homer, there’s only one famous Homer 😂
Interesting!

Why? 😂 is he a bad person?
I’ve heard some quotes and references but is he a “baddie”?

I think it would be worth watching the film if you're thinking of using the name

Wehavealaughdontwe · 12/02/2026 10:57

I love the film forrest gump so that wouldn't put me off, but in the film I think he is named after a white supremacist or member of the KKK if I remember correctly?! So that connection (even if it is made up) certainly would!

I am looking after friend’s 9 year old DD today. I just asked her what she thought of the name Forrest. Her answer … “like Gump?”

I doubt it, a film made 30+ years before he’ll be born, from what I’ve read it has mild sexual references and drug use so it’ll be… 2038 until they might watch it.
One of my girls’ names is also a name of a very famous character from a book/film (not named after it) and none of her classmates have associated with it.
I do think people slightly older than me/my Dad’s age will definitely link to Forrest Gump though 😂

ohhhhh I’ve just seen you haven’t watched the film . You absolutely must if you want to make your child Forrest as you may well change your mind 🫣

It’s quite popular in the home educating community. I know a few little Forrest/Forests.

That’s interesting!
I wonder why specifically the home educating community. Are they less concerned about peers’ opinion maybe?

The name itself is lovely but unfortunately everyone will think of the movie Forrest Gump. I think they’d get teased things like “run Forrest run” etc their whole life .

Iocanepowder · 12/02/2026 10:43

Kids will probably watch it at some point I think.

We watched it as kids fairly young and we were excited that Woody from Toy Story and Buttercup from Princess Bride were in it.

My friend called her DS Forest, he hated it and changed it as soon as he could, kids were quite cruel to him at school, this was 20 years ago, maybe it’s more common now.

I dont think it would be his peers shouting it as I was only 2 myself when the film came out 😂 he might get a few shouts from parents or grandparents at sports day though 😂

Bigearringsbigsmile · 12/02/2026 10:41

Forest gump!

Iocanepowder · 12/02/2026 10:41

I would advise you both to sit and watch Forrest Gump and then see how you feel.

The name itself is fine but I would also think Gump.

Otterbabiesholdhandstosleep · 12/02/2026 10:41

I think you need to watch the film before you make a decision.

TheClangyClunk · 12/02/2026 10:41

I love it.

I love it, we move a lot with the military so been in different schools etc. There's been a few Forrest's and kids that age don't know the gump film so it'd only be older parents and I doubt they'd say anything

I always loved the name Rupert until my military Dad said absolutely not, that’s what they call idiots in the RAF 😂
