Yay or nay. Asking for a friend. Passé 1930s or due for a revival?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Has Busby ever been a name? I've never heard it.
Busby Berkley musicals were popular in the 30s but Busby was a nickname not his real name.

Who’d name a baby after a guardsman’s fur helmet. The poor child would be subjected to ridicule!

Brother could be Bearskin 😂.

SecretSquirrelLoo · 11/02/2026 14:03

Nice for a fluffy pet

Christwosheds · 11/02/2026 14:03

Busby isn’t a name. It was the nickname of Busby Berkeley whose first name was actually Berkeley, he used his nickname and surname together as his stage name.
I really dislike nicknames as given names, so it’s a no from me.

Blueuggboots · 11/02/2026 14:02

It’s the name of a character who used to advertise British telecom.

absolutely not.

As do I. If you imagine a Busby wouldn’t be ridiculed in London, go ahead and use it for your own child. You’ll find out…

I don’t think children are ridiculing each other for their names nowadays, the population is so diverse and there are so many more names out there.

purplecorkheart · 11/02/2026 14:01

For a rabbit maybe. Nor for a child.

Dreadful. Why would you do that to your child. I don't even think it's a good name for a pet.

Really? Where on earth do you live?

London

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 11/02/2026 13:55

Yeah, why not. Give him the middle name Berkeley as well for that full 1930s razzamatazz.

Remember Mumsnet only has an approved list of about 20 names.

Short, easy to spell and pronounce, cute nickname opportunities.

It’s sufficiently unusual people will probably never have met one or heard of it, which can be a challenge for the owner.

No one would bat an eyelid at this in my area.

What's your opinion on it OP?
Just curious.

FavouriteBlueMug · 11/02/2026 13:39

As long as the child isn’t likely to live in Glasgow (Busby is a small town on the south side)
