Yay or nay. Asking for a friend. Passé 1930s or due for a revival?

What kind of arsehole would saddle their kid with Busby? A decent name is one thing you can definitely give your child. Busby is not it.

Zennia · 22/02/2026 01:26

Revival? I've never met anyone named this. Was it ever a common name?

To me it sounds like a name for a pet or a cartoon character.

sanityisamyth · 14/02/2026 15:19

As in a soldier’s hat?

FluffMagnet · 14/02/2026 10:32

It's one of the mascots at my kids' school. Busby the Bee. Don't.

I‘ve not started two threads. Maybe you’re hallucinating Busbies? (Is that the spelling for more than one Busby?)

There is this one with 28 replies (now 29) and another with 106 replies. Further down the list on the names topic.

Introduce yourself as Busby for a week, people's reactions will tell you all you need to know about the unsuitability of the name.

Also, why be a psycho and send a kid to a secondary school with the name Busby? Do they hate their child and not care about bullying?

Wishitsnows · 14/02/2026 10:10

Does she work for BT?

Seeingadistance · 14/02/2026 10:05

No. First thought, village outside Glasgow, second thought,BT adverts.

Owlplant · 14/02/2026 10:03

I would also think Man U fan.

BollyMolly · 14/02/2026 10:03

Awful

leporello · 14/02/2026 10:02

At my local railway station there was a Make Someone Happy poster and someone had written 'Kill Buzby' on it. So that's my association...

Why two threads? Just tell your "friend" it is a bold choice.

@queenofwands I think thats bixby

queenofwandss · 13/02/2026 13:47

Is this not the name of one of the AI assistants? Similar to Alexa? If it isn’t, that’s what it reminds me of!

houseofstark · 13/02/2026 13:30

Sorry, I also just think of the BT advert character. I appreciate that younger people won’t know that though so won’t have the same association!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 13/02/2026 13:26

Good lord no! It’s the bird off the BT adverts.

MrsKateColumbo · 13/02/2026 09:03

I think it's too associated with Busby Berkley who, whilst brilliant was not really a nice person

MonsteraDeliciosa · 13/02/2026 08:54

A revival? Was it ever an actual given name?

In any case it's bloody awful.

NotThatSerious · 12/02/2026 11:29

This is the name of the bus station in my old home town 😁

PudgeJudy · 12/02/2026 11:28

First thing I think of is… (so no, don’t do it)

Busby?
RS1987 · 12/02/2026 11:26

Cute for a child’s pet or teddy, not the actual child.

TheSandgroper · 12/02/2026 11:19

I want a soldier, a soldier in a busby,
I want a soldier to come and play with me.
I’d give him cream cakes (big ones, sugar ones)
I’d give him cream cakes and cream for his tea.

There are worse things than being referenced by A A Milne, I suppose.

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/02/2026 16:00

I know someone with the middle name Busby. Dad was (as mentioned above) a massive Manchester United fan.

DivorcedButHappyNow · 11/02/2026 14:45

Made me think of BT and the clothes chain Busby and Fox
