Elizabeth/Lisa?

Cupofteaandagoodbookthensleep · 05/02/2026 16:03

I love Elizabeth as a baby girl name but it’s a common middle name in my family. I was thinking about choosing a derivative name like Lizzie or Eliza as a name for my child to be known as and using Elizabeth as the full name on the birth certificate. It would be Elizabeth Anna.
But then someone suggested Lisa. I know it’s dated but it’s really growing on me and I really like the sound of it. I’d still keep Elizabeth as a full name but have her known as Lisa. What do you think?

Lisa has hair scraped back in a ponytail with two strands pulled out and held with spit. She hangs out with Donna and Leanne and has a boyfriend called Lee.

Think this says very little about the name itself, and a lot about your circle of reference ...

Calliopespa · 04/09/2026 12:49

I think Lisa is prettier than Lizzie, which sounds harsh with the z sound, and Lisa has a long history at least back as far as Lisa Camilla di Antonmaria Gherardini, who was the noblewoman they think might have been the model for the Mona Lisa. It has also been used in France as well as other European and Nordic countries for a long time.

I think you have made a really lovely choice OP, and it is time for a renaissance (appropriate word choice given the Da Vinci association!)

I’m a Lisa. My polish grandfather used to call me Leisl, which I loved. I have a degree in philosophy. I only mention that because of the hideous - and frankly weird - idea upthread that we are all like Lauren from Little Britain.

I have decided on Lisa. I like the retro 70s/80s feel and its feminine simplicity. I also love the meaning. I will give her middle names that she can use if she decides she doesn’t like it. I’ve appreciated the feedback from everyone. Thank you.

From a Lisa (one that is doing well in life, prospering, happy and respected in both former and current fields as well as marriage and health)

Thank you

Lisa is terrible. Eliza is beautiful

Why is it terrible?

You're a right idiot. I'm a Lisa with several degrees, a lecturer and public speaker. I think you're projecting

ConstantlyFuriosa · 03/09/2026 23:43

Lisa & Co is one of Jilly Cooper’s famous ‘name book’ series (now called the romance series). Along with Prudence, Imogen, Emily, Octavia, Bella and Harriet.

All middle class and perfectly lovely names. As a rebuttal to the person describing Lisa as a ‘chav’ name, upthread.

edited to add. And if Jilly Cooper didn’t know class, then…well.

I’m sure you would hate my name as well! But it is honestly what I think when I hear Lisa. Bottom set maths 1993, sat next to Vikki and Leanne.

It’s hard not to have associations with some names and Lisa is like the female equivalent of Lee, Dean, Gaz et al.

Lisa here

Lecturer in classical music. Wasn't bottom set anything. So rude and mean to assume.

EmailsaysOOO · 03/09/2026 23:40

I'm an Elizabeth and my aunty would sometimes call me Lisa..I never understood why but she was a lovely aunty so I just accepted it. My parents didn't like it when friends shortened it to Liz. Didn't understand that either..They often called me Boof because they thought I (mis)- pronounced it as Elizaboof. I didn't want to be called Boof but looking back it was sweet. They meant it lovingly.

Lisa is awful. Never known a nice Lisa either!

Eliza is lovely!

This makes me sad as a Lisa that is nice to everyone as a matter of course

KippyMcKippy · 03/09/2026 23:38

I like the name Lisa. I know a 20 year old with it as a middle name.
I like Isabella/Elizabeth names and their variants but Lisa is cooler and more unusual. It’s a pretty name

IneedAniffler · 03/09/2026 23:37

Comtesse · 24/02/2026 10:38

Lisa is a bit naff.

As a Lisa this makes me feel sad and embarrassed

IneedAniffler · 03/09/2026 23:37

Im an Elizabeth always known as Lisa

Most people call me Lis (pronounced Lees)

I hate Elizabeth because I'm anti royal and don't like the name at all. I don't particularly like Lisa since learning its apparently old fashioned

Thinking of changing it.

But I'd like it if Lisa had a revival

I really like that spelling. But then worry she would have to spell it out to everyone. I’m leaning more towards just Lisa.

Hi, I'm an Elisabeth spelt with an S and yes I do occasionally have to spell it out but not a problematic amount, and I actually love that it's a bit different.

Shloopie · 03/09/2026 23:26

And fwiw the only young Lisa I know (late 20s) is a very middle class medical student.

Shloopie · 03/09/2026 23:25

I quite like the name Lisa, but can see that lots of people will just see it as a bit naff and dated. But trying to be objective about it, it has a nice simplicity to it and will definitely have a revival at some point. I'm not sure what currently popular name will be the Lisa of the future. Might be Mia. Might be Isla. Might be Ava.

stample · 03/09/2026 05:26

One of the Lisa's.i know is stunning she has short hair and from those of her friends I know there are no Leanne or Donna and she is not married to Lee.

The other Lisa from my school days also does t for this generalisation. Beautiful woman

@Cupofteaandagoodbookthensleep Both Elisabeth and Lisa are great names IMO
If you ypu want to add a other .iddle name I would consider using one with a vogël to start so to not end up w odd spellings as initials.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 03/09/2026 01:42

Or Eliza - pronounced “El-eeza”

How about “Elisa” pronounced “ell-isa”

mathanxiety · 03/09/2026 01:34

I really don't think Lisa's time has come for revival. It's such a dated name imo, and not in a good way. Lisa Simpson was such a well known character on TV too. I think there's a lot going against it.

If you must include it somehow, how about Annalisa?

I would use Elizabeth on the BC and maybe go with Liza (as in Minelli), Elisa, Elise, Eliska (a Czech diminutive), or even Lissa.

multipackofshirts · 03/09/2026 01:17

It isn’t at all. You were the one who mentioned plumbers. Why are we arguing about this at gone 1am, anyway?

Let’s agree Lisa is a marvellous name, likely to positively surge in popularity and beloved of the aspirational middle class. Anyone who dislikes it is an irredeemable snob; it is beautiful. There we go!

And earn a bomb. But he isn’t a university lecturer, or a doctor?

Look, we’ll all have different associations with different names. I’ve lost count of the number of people who have a dog called the same name as my DD! It’s rude to say Lisa is bottom set maths 1993 but not rude to say another name is a plumber, a dog, whatever?

We all like what we like. A lot of MN beloved names don’t do it for me. I just really don’t like Lisa, sorry BUT if the OP does and is set on it then great. But then why ask if you only want positive sort of associations? My association is dated and not in a good way.

It’s you that’s devaluing a plumber over a university lecturer. I imagine a happy man earning an honest living actually in the 1980s actually.

I just don’t think you are being very kind that’s all but I appreciate you can’t see that. good night xx

For you maybe but that’s your context.

I am neutral about my own name. It’s dated.

For me, Gary is a plumber.
