Hey what does everyone think of Moses?

Last name begins with a Y.

I think my only issue is I’m not sure on the NN Moe 🤣 But I don’t know if my love for the full name outweighs that

Also on the shortlist:

  • Isaac
  • Jude
  • Miles
  • Archer
OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Moses is a very religious name and I think it would be a lot of name to bear for any child saddled with it

dogsarebetterthanppl · 19/01/2026 15:34

absolutely not moses is completely horrendous imo, i love jude but far too popular at present (i think its better to be the only one in the class than jude a jude b and jude c)
if you like biblical how about:
cain (love this)
zachariah nn zack (love zachariah not sold on zack)
ezra (one of my favs)
elijah (another fav)
joel (really nice if you aren't an eastenders fan)
raphael nn raffy (adore this)
jonah (the most beautiful child i have ever knew was called this i adored him)

RecordBreakers · 19/01/2026 15:26

It’s ok but as others have said, extremely religious. If you’re looking for something unusual I’d bear in mind that although he will probably be the only Moses in his class he probably won’t be the only Mo as it’s also a common nickname for Mohammad

Agree with this.
The only people called Moses I have ever met have been African.
The fact it is very uncommon might be a plus for you of course. It is also easy to spell and easy to get the pronunciation right if you are reading it off a list or a form, so it does have a lot going for it in some ways.

Could go by Ses or Es instead of Moe.

I don't think so. Moe, Moz or Moss are the most likely ones.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/01/2026 15:17

@user2848502016 , it doesn't make a difference whether you want the name shortened, others will probably shorten it, or he might choose to shorten it.

My parents insisted that my name wasn't to be shortened. I go by the short version now.

beAsensible1 · 19/01/2026 15:15

Moses is a lovely name

stargirl27 · 19/01/2026 15:14

Could go by Ses or Es instead of Moe.

Ipsevenenabibas · 19/01/2026 14:49

A bold choice. I like it.

user2848502016 · 19/01/2026 14:46

I like it (also think Mo is cute but Moses doesn’t really need shortening if you hate it)

Isaac is nice but a bit overused, prefer Moses to the other names on your list

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/01/2026 14:40

Probably not. I think many people will know of some Biblical tales like Noah's Ark, Moses and the 10 Commandments, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Smile

I'm not sure they'd know that names like Ethan, Jadon (Jayden), Ezra and Eli were.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/01/2026 13:47

There are lots of names from the Bible which have become so mainstream that lots of non-religious people probably don't know they're Biblical. Off the top of my head: John, Andrew, Peter, Matthew, Mark, Luke, Joseph, Jacob, Benjamin, Joshua, Adam, Joel, Timothy, Isaac, Caleb, Ethan, Nathan, Thomas, Gabriel, Daniel, David, Aaron, Noah, Reuben, Samuel, Elijah, Jonathan, Tobias, Zachary, Jude, Ezra. Moses is not one of those names in my mind, but who knows, maybe OP is a trendsetter and in ten years' time Moses will be in the top ten boys' names in the UK. Or maybe not.

VerityUnreasonble · 19/01/2026 13:27

Moses is ok, I prefer Moshe but if you're not Jewish then that would be an odd choice I guess.

Isaac is nice. Jude and Miles I have no strong feelings about. Archer, I think is quite nice as a name, Archie is a very inoffensive dimininutive, but it does remind me of Sterling Archer from the cartoon.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 19/01/2026 12:29

I would assume you were very religious - it’s only slightly less churchy than calling him Jesus…

This.

Your child will have to deal with thus until they can vgange it by deed poll.

not wildly keen on your other names, but they're all better options than Moses.

Cocktailsandcheese · 19/01/2026 13:09

I really like the other names on your list, but I think Moses is a bit out there unless you are very religious.

WhatAreYouDoingSundayBaby · 19/01/2026 13:09

I do agree Moses has very religious connotations, but then I'd say the same for Noah and that was a super popular name a few years ago. So maybe it doesn't matter?

DramaAlpaca · 19/01/2026 13:09

I don't like Moses, sorry. Like others on the thread, I see it as a very religious name. Not a fan of Isaac or Archer, either.

I like Jude and Miles/Myles a lot, though.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 19/01/2026 12:58

Far too religious Moses seems to me. Isaac is also from the bible but seems to be in more common use but I like it and the religious side wouldn’t put me off. I like the other 3 names too, just not Moses.

TomatoSandwiches · 19/01/2026 12:38

Isaac is nicer imo.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 19/01/2026 12:29

Depending on the surname, it could sound very Jewish. Not a bad thing, but could be strange if you are not. That goes for many of the OT names.

My opinions on the names Amos, Archie and Seth are influenced by Emmerdale Farm, which my grandmother watched. Other names influenced by my grandmother's love of soap operas are Amy, Diane, Ivy, Audrey and Alma. Smile

ChloeCannotCanCan · 19/01/2026 12:29

I would assume you were very religious - it’s only slightly less churchy than calling him Jesus…

user1492757084 · 19/01/2026 12:21

My favourite names on your list are ..
Moses
Isaac
Miles
In that order.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 19/01/2026 12:20

Amos has mutton chop sideburns and hangs out in the Woolpack. I like Moses (and Noah!)

chunkyBoo · 19/01/2026 12:19

It also reminds me too much of the bible so I’d automatically discard for that reason alone. All the other names are good

Peass · 19/01/2026 12:18

I think it's a very cute name for a baby and a solid name for an adult male. I like it and Isaac off your list choices. I would assume that the child is Jewish by religion and or heritage.

OtterlyAstounding · 19/01/2026 12:13

Moses makes me think of John Boyega's character in Attack the Block (great film) as I've never encountered it as a name 'in the wild'. I like it because of that association, but at the same time it's a little overtly biblical for me.

I do love PP's suggestion of Amos though (which makes me think of the character from The Expanse, haha).
