Thoughts on Sabine?

My husband and I are leaning towards ‘French’ girl names as his family is from a country in the Middle East with deep French influence. He really loves Sabine (sah-been), and I like it a lot as well, but I’m wondering if it’s a little TOO uncommon here in the US? Neither of us have ever met a Sabine. Too similar to the name Sabrina?

Genevieve is a very, very close second and a name I have loved long before we found out we were expecting. So torn!

We won’t be sharing the name until the baby is born but I can’t fight the urge to solicit feedback, lol

It makes me think of Sabine Schmitz, the awesome racing driver, and Queen of the Nurburgring. She was fabulous.

I think it is a lovely name.

It would definitely be pronounced say bine round here. South Essex.

I love it. It makes me think of Sabine Baring Gould (general Victorian oddball - man - pronounced Say-bin, as far as I can tell from the IPA on his Wikipedia article).

But on a little girl, now, I’d assume Sa-been or Za-been-a. Both very pretty!

@pinkyredroseThats a different name! It’s Sa been a. No Z sound. It’s a longer sound with the a on the end. They come from the same name source.

I thought of Sabine Wren too (Star Wars Ahsoka), I think it’s a lovely name.

My Grandad’s younger sister who was born in the early 20th century was called Sabine. Her family called her Biney, pronounced Bye-nee.

Sabine is one of my favourite names. Also one of my favourite Star Wars characters Sabine Wren (very niche)

It's actually Za-been-eh, though that's not how it sounds if your first language is English.

I know a few German women called Sabine and they pronounce it Sabeena

The Sabine women were from Italy. It’s a Latin name. It’s not French in origin.

Therefore it’s Sa-been. Sabrina and Sabina are different names but Sabine and Sabina are of course linked. I like Sabine and Sabina and most people know how to pronounce them and spell them! AI bizarrely thinks it’s French.

Fwiw, it's not like Sabrina, imo, despite sharing the initial syllable.

It's very similar in terms of spelling, and the Sab and in have the same sounds.

Sabine would be perfectly fine in the US. It's the place where you're least likely to have anyone make a comment on your name. I live here and the people (young and older) that I know have all sorts of names, from all sorts of traditions. Nobody minds if your name is unusual or ubiquitous.

Genevieve is lovely, but I prefer Sabine.

Funny how people sometimes go the opposite way. I went to school with someone who was one of 4 in her class with her name. She gave her dds really unusual names I'd never heard of before.

When I was at nursery that was my best friends name. I’m now 40 and have never come across that name since. I love it.

I much prefer Genevieve, gorgeous name! I know a couple, one goes by Evie.

Less keen on Sabine, I know one and she is German.
