What does the name Jamie bring to mind?

His full name would be James to give him options but we'd call him Jamie.

I think the best thing you can do for a child is give them a name they won't have to spend the rest of their lives correcting or just having to passively accept that people get it wrong half the time.

This does mean excluding some beautiful names - but please everyone - go for ease of use when you're choosing. It'll be bad enough you having to do it for them for the first 11 or 12 years - the kid has to do it for their whole life!

It's nice especially if you're going for James as the official name so he has the option of a formal alternative.

It doesn't seem to have any connotations of a particular social class and is fairly timeless (though less common than in the 80s/90s when it was very popular - I know a couple of young Jimmys now whereas that used to be the "old man" diminutive).

It's pleasant sounding and to my ear sounds like a "friendly" name.

I'm not keen on it for girls though not what you asked! A couple of our younger female staff have been Jamies and said outs annoying because people get an email from you and assume you are a man. One of them was spelt "Jaime" which was her parents attempt to show it was the feminine version. Cue multiple people incorrectly correcting the spelling!

It’s my brother’s name and therefore makes me think of a 50 something man child who has never been a responsible adult in life and has zero life skills. Make of that what you will!

There were four of them in my son's class. 2 were actually James. He's 30.

There is an issue with teachers assuming Jamie is short for James. My son did tell the odd one that he was a Jamie not James.

Teacher here. Reminds me naughty boys🤣it's a name i never associate with an adult. If the actual name is James this could be used professionally if desired i suppose. James a classic name.

The most clever and studious person I know is a Jamie. I say they design spaceships but actually their job is even more clever than that and I couldn’t tell you what it was. But then also common for naughty boys. I was thinking it has a very wide range for characteristics in the Jamie’s I know.

Dad was Jim (James) my dB is, also James. He was called Jam by friends growing up. From his
early 20s he, started going by Jim. Only we, as close family still address him as James.

Jamie in my head is a big but gentle Scottish man in a plaid shirt. My GF was christened James but always Jem at home - if I’d had a son, he’d have been either Jem or Jamie, after him.

And like @landlordhell I couldn't have imagined an elderly Jamie. Until I met a nonagenarian one and it absolutely suited him!

Names evolve though and the nickname/short name you think your child will have is not necessarily the one they end up using.

I have a Jamie, called that to distinguish him from my Dad, also a James. My Jamie is lovely ❤️.
I’ve noticed recently that younger boys ( primary age) are Jimmy rather than Jamie.

I have a James…. He's nearly 20 now and one of the reasons we chose it was because it has so many options. He's been/ is J, Jim, Jamie and James. I think he has landed on James but I love the fact he had options!
