Augustus vs. Augustin?

So...we like the nickname Gus and do not like the full name August (too trendy, not classic enough). That leaves Augustus or Augustin (ah-GUS-tin). Preferences? Difference in vibe or same vibe?

Augustin will be perpetually mispronounced, and as a doctor I can't look at it without seeing "Augmentin" (an antibiotic).

Pottyhelp · 10/01/2026 21:07

Sorry, August is the most classic, least trendy of those choices.

BoleynMemories13 · 10/01/2026 21:06

I was going to suggest Angus too. I really don't like either of your options.

(Although personally I prefer August to Angus)

OriginalSkang · 10/01/2026 20:34

If you pronounce it Ah gus tin you will forever be correcting people who will say it Or gus tin

Augustin seems very (posh) Catholic to me - the sort of thing Jacob Rees Mogg might call his children.

I actually really love it despite that association, but perhaps Augustus has wider appeal.

Yes Jacob Rees mogg came straight to my mind too

Cat1504 · 10/01/2026 20:32

Neither
August is ok though

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/01/2026 20:32

Augustus is Gloop to me. Augustin is too fancy and fussy sounding for my taste but my preference of the two.

I prefer Augustus of your two options but much prefer Angus or Fergus than either.

LilyLemonade · 10/01/2026 20:22

I prefer Gustav.
What about Fergus?

Lollylavender · 10/01/2026 20:14

Much prefer Augustus. Classic and easy to pronounce (emphasis on Gus)

Augustin looks like the French or German pronunciation

Piglet89 · 10/01/2026 20:13

Say “Augustus” and I immediately add the surname “Gloop”.

MotorbikeStuntRider · 10/01/2026 20:08

Gustave? Augustus is forever Gloop .

The only Gus I knew was nicknamed Gus Guzzleguts. Maybe after the aforementioned Gloop.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 10/01/2026 19:38

August?

ChuisEpuisee · 10/01/2026 19:38

Personally I prefer Augustin but you'll spend a lot of time correcting people in where the emphasis lies. Lovely name.

Augustus has strong Gloop vibes.

I do like August though and don't think it's particularly trendy - still a classic for me.

Mistletoeiggi · 10/01/2026 19:37

Angus?
