Priya Matilda - opinions?

Bluebunnie · 10/01/2026 15:17

Hey, what’s everyone’s opinion on the name Priya, paired with the middle name Matilda?

I am half Indian, so I’m okay with the fact that the name has a cultural assumption.

Matilda is the name of my sister.

We already have two children, Isaac and Cassia.
This baby is our last.

@SpringBulbsPop , not everyone will know it, and I'd probably ask about a name that is new to me.
I don't think that there is any reason not to use it.

I’m guess you don’t want Matilda as her first name because it’s your sisters, so I guess that’s not really an option.

I like Priya, I have met/know quite a few and think it’s pretty however assuming your DD will be only 1/4 Indian and assuming she 3/4 white (correct me if I’m wrong) I don’t think she will thank you for giving her a name she will have to explain. Of course that may not be important to you and of course you can use it just something to consider.

Why will she have to explain it? Priya is a pretty well known name. It’s easy to spell and pronounce. It will just be her name 🤷🏻‍♀️

Love both names! 💛💛💛

I like Priya more than Matilda though.

May I ask what makes you see it as a god awful combination? Is it just personal opinion or something I’m missing?

Matilda is the name of my sister so that will be her middle name regardless.
Is there something in particular about it being paired with Priya that you don’t like or is it just Matilda full stop?

Matilda is really popular Op: it is far from awful.

I would have Matilda first, too.

Why when everyone will be calling her Priya?

sharkstale · 17/01/2026 11:44

Love the name Priya, not keen on the combination

@Bluebunnie , it's just the opinion of someone who feels every child must have a filler middle name. Take your pick from Rose, May/Mae, Rae, Grace, Jane, Anne, Marie or Louise. James or Jay for a boy. Smile

R2D2T2 · 16/01/2026 14:36

Matilda is awful on its own. Combined with Pryia it’s even worse.
How about Pryia Rose or Pryia Marie or something. Anything has got to better than that god-awful combination.

My initials are PMS 😫

You are not the only one! I know a PMT which is what made me think of it! She got a very hard time at school - lots of "ignore her: it's that time of the month ..."

Calliopespa · 13/01/2026 18:22

The initials PM are also quite cool

Provided the surname doesn't start with T!

7238SM · 16/01/2026 15:01

99% of the time she will be known by just her 1st name or 1st name surname. not 1st and middle name.

I prefer Matilda and Priya as a middle name. I can't think of any negatives except possibly initial issues. (PMT/ PMS as someone already said)

MysticCatLady · 16/01/2026 14:53

Tara Matilda
Maya Matilda
Jeena Matilda
Sunita Matilda
Sonia Matilda
Anika Matilda
Monica Matilda

All Indian first names that are easily pronounced. She might be annoyed about being the only sibling with a very Indian name (Priya).

Try spelling Priya properly..

Pryia is a variant spelling of Priya. Sorry, my mistake, OP 🙂.

“flow” is massively overrated I agree, and I don't understand the posters who suggest swapping the name order so that the first names flow.

My parents chose first names that 'flow'. The bad news is that the names didn't flow with the surname, I had my 'middle' name at the beginning and it's slightly ridiculous with the surname. My 'known as' name doesn't flow with the surname.

The OP's DD will probably be Priya Bunnie most of the time, not Priya Matilda or Priya Matilda Bunnie (which does flow).

Or L.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 16/01/2026 14:00

Those are two incredibly pretty names. I’m not sure I personally love their flow but “flow” is massively overrated in my personal opinion.

There is only one thing I would consider:

You being half Indian will probably have a stronger connection to that part of your heritage than your DD, who will be a “quarter” / presumably have one Indian grandparent.

That’s a least how it is for me compared to my parents (not Indian heritage btw, but I suspect the principle still applies).

I personally am therefore glad that they didn’t give me a first name that is obviously linked to that “quarter” of my heritage simply because it isn’t my primary cultural background. But that’s just my personal point of view.

yorkshiretoffee · 13/01/2026 18:27

Gorgeous names, love them all (and I rarely say that)
