For a boy. Suggestions in a similar vein (whatever that vein may be, as I’m not sure there’s a common thread) are very welcome.

I didn’t say in all of Scotland. I said in Scottish both charts - ie some of Scotland: https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/6402636/top-baby-names-2023-scotland/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Different things are normal in different places. I’m unclear what part of that is giving you such trouble. Thank you for your input, I guess?

You didn’t see what I was replying to. If someone is being racist, I will say so.

Apart from Beare, they are standard names. Magnus is currently the second most popular boys’ names in Scottish birth stats, for example. They just aren’t standard names where you happen to live and teach. Which is fine.

We’re happy with how they all go with our last name.

Magnus isn’t even in the top 20!

I like the idea of Beare but it's too close to the word so will be said in all kinds of unpredictable ways as well as "Beh" "Burr" and "Beer".
How about "Beren"? Or even Bearan/ Béarán?

Mamabearandcubs · 01/01/2026 08:19

Tulin or a new suggestion Jago

Raiseaglassforeverynote · 01/01/2026 01:40

The proper spelling has a fada, so it’s Ciarán really.

Yeah, it's just that this stupid phone won't let me do the fada. Technology has defeated me!

urbanbuddha · 01/01/2026 05:00

Magnus. I also like Sholto.

falalalalaaaaaaaa · 01/01/2026 04:45

Love Magnus. Similar vein (possibly?) - Tobin or Ruaridh.

Cian, Darragh, or Eoin are all nice Irish names too.

billiongulls · 01/01/2026 04:20

I think Ciaran usually has a fada, Ciarán, which elongates that a.

Isn't Kallax the name of the range of shelving units in IKEA? It's a shame though, because I like the sound and flow of it.

How about Angus or Duncan?

Maybe . . .

Tilly or Tally (variations of Tully).

cramptramp · 01/01/2026 01:42

None of them.

Raiseaglassforeverynote · 01/01/2026 01:40

loislovesstewie · 31/12/2025 20:33

Ciaran. ( BTW, I always consider that to be the proper spelling)

Now now op, your comment is verging on being as narrow minded as the persons comment you’re replying to!
FWIW, I’d say Ciaran (and other spelling variations of this name such as Kieran, Cyren, Kieron, Kyrean) is very common, I’ve never heard of Torin and only know 1 Magnus - Magnus Magnusson who presented on TV years ago, so I wouldn’t class them as ‘standard’ names. As a teacher of 35 years, I must have come across 1000s of boys names!
The thing to consider is what their surname will be. Torin Bloggs doesn’t sound as good as Torin Harper for example.

I was going to say I really like Hampshire 😆

I can kinda see it working with a surname like Jones or Smith.

Anyhow, Magnus, Torin or Ciaran are all great, although if you do use Ciaran you have to decide fada or not.

Tully is an historic name for the Roman orator Cicero, in case that matters to you.

Hampshire Jones would be a super cool detective in a vintage Jag, with a dark past. I can totally see it! 😁

I didn’t know that about Cicero, so thank you.

Ive no idea why someone who doesn't like your names should be painting roundabouts. Seems very weird.

Ciaran is nice but not Beare.

They didn’t just not like the names. If that was all they’d said, their comments would still be there.
