Jasmine - is this too boring/dated?

Hi, my daughter is 3 weeks old. Do you think Jasmine is too safe/boring or too dated?

Me and my husband have uncommon names.
my sons name is heard of but definitely not popular.
My eldest daughter’s names is uncommon, 3 syllable name which is often a bit of a marmite name but is a conversation starter and still my favourite name of all time!

I wanted a similar style name for my baby daughter but couldn’t commit to one. (I love 3 syllables ending in a sound).

I absolutely love the name Eliza and this was the top contender throughout the pregnancy. But I’m worried it’s having a bit of a popularity rise at the moment (I seem to be hearing it everywhere). And as previously mentioned the rest of the family have uncommon names. Plus my hubby struggled to remember this name!

Baby was also called Yasmin for about 10hours but then I changed my mind to Jasmine.

I’m also concerned about what suits our ethnicity, she’s mixed (mostly black British) and was worried Eliza and Yasmin didn’t suit her.

So my question is, do I stick with Jasmine or do you prefer Yasmin or Eliza?

Thanks

Jasmine is a nice name - how does it stand up with your elder daughter's name? I know a few Jamines but they're all late teens/early 20s. How would you feel about it being shortened to Jazz?

Personally I prefer Eliza - it feels like an Eliza would be strong and possibly a tiny bit feisty. Which is a good thing in my book!

Other ideas:
Sylvia
Julia
Kezia
Tabitha
Iris

I think it's quite difficult to avoid giving your children totally unusual names - they seep into our subconscious along with everyone else's! My dc all have what I thought were less commonly used names and 2 of them ended up being top 20/top 5 a couple of years later 🙄

I'm very biased but love it. I don't spell it with an 'e' though. My friends and family call me Jaz

PolkaDotPorridge · 03/01/2026 12:44

It’s a beautiful name. I’ve always like it.

WaltzingWaters · 03/01/2026 12:44

Jasmine and Eliza are both lovely. But yes, Eliza is quite popular at the moment. I’ve heard the name quite a bit in the groups and playground with my 3yo.
Much prefer Jasmine to Yasmin.

roshi42 · 03/01/2026 12:38

I think Jasmine is quite charming actually. I have a 20 year old cousin named Jasmine. It’s just the nicest smelling flower ever! And kind of exotic. But sweet. A good fiesty Disney princess. And has the possibility of ‘cool’ nicknames as a teen, e.g. Jazz.

I really love Jasmine, the only Jasmine I know is in her 30s and I have 3 young kids so come across lots of names, so not popular at all in my area.

I do know 5 Eliza's all under 8 however.

Not so keen on Yasmin, I just think Jasmine is alot prettier sounding. Tasmin could be another option for you? More unusual but similar sound

Cocktailsandcheese · 03/01/2026 07:28

Love Jasmine!

HerVagestyTheQueef · 02/01/2026 23:43

Love Jasmine! Pretty, classy and jazzy!

But then I do have one of my own, so I’m biased. Mine is 16 now and I’ve not come across another in any of her schools. She does have a friend called Yasmine, though!

tinyspiny · 02/01/2026 23:39

Jasmine is lovely and much nicer than Yasmin .

Yumbayumba1 · 02/01/2026 23:37

It’s a beautiful old English name. It’s a beautiful flower. Always reminds me of Jasmine Guinness. Im surprised it’s not mlre
popular with the Ottilie / Olivia / Serena / Camilla brigade

BigPurpleBookQueen · 02/01/2026 21:26

I think Jasmine is beautiful.

i have a friend called Cameo, I would have called my child this if they were not both boys

cupfinalchaos · 02/01/2026 20:38

I know a Jasmine.. shortened to Jazzy.

Komododragonchocolatecoin · 02/01/2026 20:38

Jasmine is lovely. I've worked in early years for nearly a decade (in different areas - inner city and also country) and I've only known 2-3 in the whole time.

Same with Eliza tbh, but I prefer Jasmine.

It will 100% get shortened to Jas by friends when she's older. I think Jas is cute though.

Lovely name

Is it really a "VERY well-known" porn site? We're on page 3 of the comments and nobody else has mentioned that yet.

What about Kesia or Keziah?

Kesia looks wrong and Keziah gets said as Kez-eye-ah and Kez-ya .

Eek! Its a VERY well-known porn website, which is probably one reason why there aren’t many about.
Eliza is pretty. Yasmin sounds really Asian.

What about Kesia or Keziah?

bexandthebeans · 02/01/2026 05:56

I like Jasmine. Could be shortened to Jassy if you don’t like Jazz?

Pemba · 02/01/2026 01:45

Jasmine is quite pretty but Jessamine is prettier, classier and more unusual. It's the original form of the name, and would give the diminutives Jess or Jessa, if you wanted to avoid Jazz.

Eliza is a great name too.

Nothing wrong with Jasmine or Yasmin though.

And all the names suggested would suit a girl with any ethnic background, why not?

Silversaxo · 02/01/2026 01:37

Jasmine is the nicer name of the 3.

Yasmine and Eliza are horrible names. Just ugly names. You may aswell call her mavis.

k1233 · 01/01/2026 23:16

Yasmina is a 3 syllable name ending on a sound. Given you have been calling her Yasmin, it might be an option.

Googling it's not common and means jasmine

Jasmine is beautiful! I'd consider it for a daughter but I hate the nickname Jazz which seems inevitable 😑
