Sheila, Lorraine or Glinda?

I know these names are unconventional but I was thinking they might be nice. I was originally going to go for Sheila or Lorraine (Lorrie for short) but after watching Wicked I’m thinking maybe Glinda would be fun!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

All horrible. I know this is a tiny snapshot but every Sheila I’ve known has been awful.

BatsInHibernation · 29/12/2025 21:34

It's GA-linda

Same. Although I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than be Lorraine.

Agree and also appreciate the delicate wording

Oh come on they really aren't better.
Some of the old ladies names are hideous.
I'd rather be Lorraine than Ethel

Or Hilda. I don't see that having a revival any time soon.

FairViewRosie25 · 29/12/2025 21:32

But spelt Shelagh as Gaelic surely

Guys I know they’re unconventional but some of these comments are really mean. #Bekind

Absolutely not. Even Maud and Gertrude are better than those!

Why stop there? What about Anette or Wendy?
Don't do that to a child.

I quite like Wendy. My teenage dts have a friend Wendy and it really suits her.

Gerlinde? I have never met a Lorraine that I liked (and I was at school with several, and worked with others. I wonder why the name is always Lorraine, why not Alsace for a bit of balance?). Sheila… my Mum had several really drippy friends called Sheila, all of whom were in miserable marriages but couldn’t leave because respectable women didn’t.

IAmTheLogLady · 29/12/2025 21:16

I know a Lorraine who goes by Rainy which is lovely.
That's the nicest thing I can think of to say. I'm sorry op. I am usually really kind and laid back with baby names but if this is real please don't do it.

mdinbc · 29/12/2025 21:13

Oh please don't use Glinda. You could go with Glenda, which was popular in the same era as Lorraine and Sheila. I picture them all at the church basement organizing a charity tea. So bringing back grandma names.

But this isn’t on the AIBU topic?

Some posts you have no choice, you are just clearly being unreasonable.

I think Lorraine is the best out of the three Glinda will be like all those poor children who were named after Game of Thrones characters.

ShetlandishMum · 29/12/2025 21:12

No.

Joeninety · 29/12/2025 21:11

How about Jo ?

boogietrapps · 29/12/2025 21:11

Sheila!! My favourite girls name but I could never convince DH, we would’ve spelled it Síle (the Irish way). It’s flipping gorgeous.

And yet, this is a time where you probably still need to hear YABU regardless...Yikes...

Smartiepants79 · 29/12/2025 21:11

For the love of god, please not Glinda. It’s like naming your child Cinderella or Tinkerbel.
The other two are very dated and not that pretty.
Laurie or Lauren is nicer.

arcticpandas · 29/12/2025 21:10

OK if you live in a small town in Alabama. Otherwise no.

LighthouseLED · 29/12/2025 21:10

Lorraine is the best of the three but I’d think of something else - there are plenty of names out there.

Chocolatebuttonanyone · 29/12/2025 21:10

How about Mavis? Or Lavinia?

SaveYourMoneyAndStopMakingMeCry · 29/12/2025 21:09

Absolutely not. Even Maud and Gertrude are better than those!

GrandHighPoohbah · 29/12/2025 21:08

I honestly thought from the title this was going to be a "help me name the middle aged woman in the story I'm writing" kind of thread.

FridayFriesDay · 29/12/2025 21:08

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 29/12/2025 21:02

Just in case this is not a complete wind-up, please remember that you are naming a person, not a kitten, not a bin lorry and not a middle-aged women from 1979

”not a bin lorry” 😂 😂 😂
