Sheila, Lorraine or Glinda?

I know these names are unconventional but I was thinking they might be nice. I was originally going to go for Sheila or Lorraine (Lorrie for short) but after watching Wicked I’m thinking maybe Glinda would be fun!

I hope this is a wind up because I would feel so sorry for a little girl having to go through school with this name. It’s not a new name that other kids would think is ‘cool’. They are embarrassing for a young girl.

Actually if I say the name Sheila often enough and picture a sweet baby while saying it, it does start to grow on me.

Clare and Rachel will return well before that I reckon. I’m 43 and know tonnes around my age ish, and I’m pretty sure name cycles are a lot shorter than 120 years 😂. Karen, Joanne and Sally will probably be back even sooner.

Exactly! I'm 42 and my DD1(18) joked to me that all my friends are called Michelle or Tracy (true, I know lots my age). But I said that all of HER friends are called Ruby or Olivia or a variant of a "Belle" name.

Lorraine and Sheila are definitely 70s upwards. Never met any my age, not even my sister's age and she's 10 years older than me (52).

I've never met or known of a Glinda in my life, except for The Wizard of Oz/Wicked.

I think some people commenting are in denial about their own ages!

I knew one Lorraine my age (mid 40s) but that’s it. The Sheilas I know are my mother’s contemporaries or older.

Go a generation further back and you'll do better. Pearl, Stevie, Dorothy, Margot, Elizabeth, Nancy, Alice, Evelyn, Julia and Rosalind are all nice.

Síle (pronounced "shee-la") is a traditional Irish girl's name, the Gaelic form of Sheila, meaning "heaven" or "sky,"

Síle is the Irish form of Cecilia.
Sheila is the anglicised spelling of Síle (not the other way around).

It has the same meaning as Cecilia, which isn’t heaven or sky afaik.

@plinkyplonk123 since you started this thread Sheila has grown on me.
I think it's perfectly fine. One of my favourite books is "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great" by Judy Blume. Admittedly the book was written in the 70s when Sheila was more popular as a name but names go in cycles so I doubt your baby Sheila will stand out amongst all the other "old" names that are coming back.
