Naming baby almost the same as me?

In practical terms it could be annoying. Lots of little things that might grate. If your husband calls a name from another room you might not distinguish those two names.

Sophia is very pretty, I don't think it really matters that it's very similar to your name. It's quite sweet

I know a couple, Lucy and Andrew, who have two children called Lucia and Andrey. Which I think is odd and lacking in imagination.

I (a woman) have a similar name to my Dad, think Charlie. Was never an issue, in fact quite liked it. My siblings had different names and were never bothered by this

DS in his 30s is called Oliver (it became much more common after he was born). DIL wanted to call their DD Olivia, likely their only child. He refused saying it made him look like an "egotistical dick." They settled on it as a middle name.

No, of course you can't prevent people going out with people with similar names .....I was just posting it as it was funny! Alice and Alex sound v similar (when said fast) so all 3 in the household had the same or similar names.....

Breanna and Brian sound completely different and are not comparable to Sophie and Sophia. Ditto Alexandra and Alice which are clearly totally different names with different etymological roots. I don't think you can prevent your kids going out with people with similar names!!

I know an Alex(andra), with a daughter called Alice and new boyfriend called Alex(ander)! Lol

Not weird at all. We named our daughter after her dad so she is Breanna and he is Brian.

Weird. Don’t do it. Give her your name as a middle name if you love it so much.

That doesn’t mean it’s not common though. It’s really common.

Does anyone call you Soph would be my first reservation. I have a Sophie who we regularly call Soph. What if you both responded to someone calling you soph? To me it’s confusing- lovely idea to use it as a middle name though

Sons born David III are often called Trey.

Will Smith, Michael Jordan, Robert Downey, Clint Eastwood, Alec Baldwin, Robert de Niro, Freddy Prinze, George Bush, Martin Luther King, Douglas Fairbanks, John Adams, William Pitt, Donald Trump, Henry VIII.

And Frank Sinatra, Martin Sheen, JFK, Robert Kennedy, Donald Trump Jnr, all named their own sons after themselves.

A boy who went to school with DS is named Dave as is his dad and his dad.
The 3 go by nicknames only grandmother and mum call them Dave.

It was quite usual in the past, but I haven't ever met anyone born after around 1950 who is. There's a lot more naming variety these days and we see children as individuals rather than extensions of their parents.

It's quite usual for children to be named after a parent so there's no reason why one syllable different would be 'seriously weird'.

As I said up thread ,I hated being given the same ,unusual ,name as my mother .It genuinely made me feel less of an individual and an offshoot of my mother .
Being referred to a "little limetree" to distinguish me from "big limetree"
And her opening my official post when I was late teens /early twenties put the lid on it !
And they didn't even have the grace to give me a middle name ,though they had done so for my brothers .

If your partner is okay with it, just remember that that occasionally official paperwork could/will get confused in the future. The same initials, whose post is it to open? My husband was always accidentally opening his sisters post (MR C)

My in-laws gave three names to their daughters My husband and his older brother were named after their grandfathers, but have only ever used their middle names. I didn’t know his first name for several months into our relationship until his mother was telling him off one day …
The older sister changed her name when she started school because she didn’t like being called Jenny. I’ve only known her as Sarah.

Does your name get shortened? Do you think the baby will get a possible nickname as she gets older from family to identify her from you….lots of things to consider….

This used to be common. However a word of warning. Officials can be careless and cause problems. Adult child with same name left home but council removed me from the register of voters. Subsequent postal vote invalid and credit report had us mixed up for years which has been impossible to correct as they go on the register. Medical records mixed and transferred when adult daughter left home. Various other annoyances from careless officials and little that can be done to correct and sometimes it’s a while before the problem arises.
