Rory is a boys' name to me, and I love it. It's the name of one of my sons, and was very unusual in the UK when we picked it. 'Red king' is the meaning, so for me it doesn't work on a girl at all. Actually, I'd go as far as to say I strongly dislike it on a girl.

Aurora is pretty, though.

Needspaceforlego · 12/12/2025 10:55

Rory is a boys name.

Aurora is lovely why shorten it?
Or go for Audrey if you want something shorter.

Anna20MFG · 12/12/2025 10:49

Rory is a tall, slightly overweight, genial, red haired Scotsman in my mind! Aurora is a lovely name!

It's not dated in England and Wales. It's ranked 24th for boys. Upward trajectory.
Gary on the other hand is 2671st, and Kevin 264th.

By "dated" I meant sounds old fashioned - like all those current 4 year olds called Percy or Winston.
They might be popular names but they sound dated.

HugoYorway · 12/12/2025 10:20

I don't like the sound either. None of it sounds good.

CraftyNavySeal · 12/12/2025 10:12

Disney princess so a bit common shall we say.

I would pick Lorelei instead!

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2025 10:06

Awful. Aurora is just such an ugly sounding name..

RegalDiamondMonster · 12/12/2025 09:46

Needmorelego · 10/12/2025 19:06

Yes but it's a bit of a "dowdy" and dated name even for boys.
Like Gary or Kevin.
Sorry.

Why are there so many girls being given male names, and never the other way around?

I actually prefer feminine names on boys, my boys list is very much full of ‘girly’ and soft names.

Itsnearlymybirthday · 12/12/2025 08:51

Really Like Aurora but really dislike Rory.

BluntHazeGuide · 12/12/2025 08:29

Why name her one name when you're going to call her another? Just call her Rory if that's what you want to call her day to day. I thought nicknames kind of 'emerged' rather than coming pre-selected?

ChilliMochaCoco · 12/12/2025 08:25

Love both and really wanted Aurora and Rory nn for dd2 but dh wasn't as keen as me.
Go for it !
I don't know any and I'm in the sort of area where you would expect a few

Borrrrred · 12/12/2025 08:19

I love it. Very Gilmore Girls.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 12/12/2025 08:16

I don’t like either.
Aurora reminds me of parents who dress her in pink and frills.
Rory is awful. Bad enough for a boy really awful for a girl.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 11/12/2025 12:37

I like Aurora, but I've only ever met boys called Rory (UK-based).

Dairymilkisminging · 11/12/2025 12:06

Im baised. My dd born in may is aurora nn rory. I love it. Go for it

GreenGodiva · 11/12/2025 12:05

I’ve got a chihuahua named Aurora and her nick name is Roro, little legs and when she eats her own poo it’s often Rat dog.

HugoYorway · 11/12/2025 11:58

@Mariammaom , It's awful though. Alex for Alexandra is fine. I don't like Charlie for a girl - it looks like they were hoping for a boy.

People can use any nickname they like - it’s not ‘reserved’ for one gender!
It doesn't mean that they should.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 11/12/2025 07:25

rory will forever be thought of as a Celtic boys name, why make this difficult for your child?

PodMom · 11/12/2025 07:03

The character Rory Gilmore was female. Though that was a nickname for Loralei (sp). Never sure how they got Rory from that. But it wouldn’t be a total surprise for a girls name I guess, especially as a nickname.

i find Aurora a real mouthful though. Just seems difficult to say.

LilyCanna · 11/12/2025 06:59

Aurora is a bit Disney princess and may be tricky for little ones to pronounce.

Rory for me is firmly a boy’s name.

CurlewKate · 11/12/2025 06:24

Mariammaom · 10/12/2025 18:42

Rory is a nickname for Aurora, just like Alex is for Alexandra or Charlie for Charlotte. People can use any nickname they like - it’s not ‘reserved’ for one gender!

Well technically of course. Worth thinking about the fact that it never goes the other way though.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 10/12/2025 23:38

It's alright but there are lots of boy Rorys around and in the UK it has a v male vibe I think

Pettenell · 10/12/2025 23:36

I like Aurora, and Rory is a lovely, natural nickname for it.

Oneofthepotters · 10/12/2025 22:29

Aurora is quite pretty. Rory…Bremner or McGrath…the latter with very unsavoury connotations.
