We have narrowed it down to Elyanna / Angelina?
Which do you prefer?
I prefer Angelina (Angie for short), DH prefers Elyanna

Eliana. Elyanna pronouncation would be Eel-y-Anna surely

CrostaDiPizza · 10/12/2025 09:37

I never understand people who seem to think any longer name will always be shortened.
That's because they generally are shortened. Even if the full name is used, syllables get skipped.
e.g. Matlda - Tilda, Olivia - Liv-ya, Felicity - Flissty, Eleanor - Elnor etc

If you don't like the short version, then there's not a lot you can do about it once the child is older and they decide to use a diminutive.

CrostaDiPizza · 10/12/2025 09:01

@Ddakji She might choose to be Ellie, and Elyanna splits into Ellie and Anna sounds, so it's more likely to be shortened.
(Not sure if it was deliberate but your post seems patronising.)

She might but that post seemed to imply it was inevitable. I’m not being patronising, but I never understand people who seem to think any longer name will always be shortened.

Elyanna will turn into yet another Ellie.

Angelina is much nicer.

The Eliana I knew was never Ellie. Some if not most people can deal with more than 2 syllables, you know.

Elyanna looks like "Anna who comes from Ely"

Yep - it's very weird -

So for this reason Angelina

But I think Evangeline is nicer

I don't like spellings that are so unusual I wonder if they aren't made up so I'd say Angelina.

But for me Angelia Jolie spoils it a bit (I don't like celeb culture), so I'd also go for Evangeline (which I love) or Angelica.

If you call her Elyanna, she‘ll spend her whole life having to spell it out - people will put Elianna or Ellianna. Angelina is a sweet name - and you can get her all the Angelina ballerina stuff.

localbutterfly · 09/12/2025 21:16

Angelina's nice. I don't think Eliana spelled as Elyanna or Elyana works well, but how about Ayana/Ayanna, Ilyana/Iliyana, or even Alannah?

KarriTreeSullivan · 09/12/2025 16:03

If you really like the look of the Ely rather than Eli,
Ellyanna? Still looks 'wrong' but mispronunciation will be minimal.
Elly-Anna? (I like them, but that'll really get the Mumsnet back up, a hyphenated first name!)

RuthW · 09/12/2025 16:00

Both lovely names.

I prefer Eliana (I like arna names) and I love Angelica too.

KarriTreeSullivan · 09/12/2025 15:58

I love the name Elyanna, much prettier than Angelina in my opinion, and personally I think Angie is very old fashioned and not in the good way yet.

Also just to add to the chorus Elyanna looks like 2 names put together Ely-Anna. Bit clunky and unnatural to an English speakers eye perhaps. Much prefer the Eliana spelling, it looks nicer and is simpler to understand.

Nursemumma92 · 09/12/2025 15:13

Definitely Eliana. Elyanna is just setting her up for a lifetime of sounding out her name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 09/12/2025 14:30

Eliana

CheeseWisely · 09/12/2025 14:17

Eliana.

CrostaDiPizza · 09/12/2025 14:13

spelling

Pranksters · 09/12/2025 14:02

Elyanna but spelt Eliana.

CrostaDiPizza · 09/12/2025 12:03

@ldnelegantelephant , Elyana, Elyanna, Elianna, Eliana
Eliana is by far the most popular selling.

ldnelegantelephant · 09/12/2025 11:53

What about Elyana?

I think that’s a bit confusing as when you see “Anna” in a name, that’s how you’ll pronounce it.

Elyana?

Yes the spelling ‘Elyanna’ that you prefer, completely changes the pronunciation, making it a completely different name. ‘Eliana’ looks and sounds lovely and will save your daughter from a lifetime of having to correct people.

NuffSaidSam · 09/12/2025 11:04

ldnelegantelephant · 09/12/2025 10:55

Pronounced same as Eliana but I prefer the spelling Elyanna 😭

I think it's best to not be too creative with spelling when it comes to your child's name. Generally best, for ease, to stick with the most traditional/common spelling. It still sounds the same after all.

You might prefer the spelling, but you need to think about what your daughter would prefer. Eliana sounds exactly the same, and your daughter won't have to spend her life correcting people.
