We've got three boys and not finding out the sex. So I might be back asking for boy name advice!
But for now here's our girl list
Primrose
Pearl
Keira
Emerald (maybe too unusual?) although we like Emmy
Maeve
Esme
Scarlet

Any views welcome!

Unfortunately I just don't like any of the Irish girls names really, we've been through them so many times as this is my 6th pregnancy. I really like Fiadh but there's a Fiadh at nursery and people just assume she is Thea, and the dad seemed a bit regretful when he talked to me about her name.
Mary was my lovely MIL name and will be a middle name for sure. Thanks for the suggestions though.

I'm not tied to the Irish link, I want to find a name we really love. Emerald has really grown on me. It was actually my son who suggested it (age 5) because he heard me talking about Pearl. At first I was like Emerald?? And then it kind of slid it's way onto the list!

I imagined some would find the Emerald Isle a bit cheesy though and it's not something I would say to people (especially not our Irish family who would probably laugh at me 😃). It was actually DH who picked up on the Emerald Isle link but more in a humourous way.

My only concern is having one child without an Irish name, will they feel left out? I doubt it personally but names not 'going together' is jarring for me. I love hearing sibling names that go well together.

Of your listed names, I most like..
Scarlett
Emerald

Other names that are not popular Irish names today...
Mary
Molly
Catherine
Anastasia
Majella
Patrice
Aileen
Birdie
Deirdre
Clare
Clover
Esther
Esmeralda
Look up the names of the Irish ancestors, the Saints names of the churches they were baptised in etc...

Or call her Mary - nick name May and give her an Emerald bracelet.

LivingTheDreamish · 02/12/2025 04:15

I liked Emerald/Emmy until you mentioned the Emerald Isle and now it seems a bit twee (sorry). Love Daphne!

MirandaBlu · 02/12/2025 02:34

I love Daphne, Maeve, and Esme.

PuffleHuffledon · 02/12/2025 02:21

Sorry OP, I’m Irish and find the Emerald Isle connection a bit cringey.

mathanxiety · 02/12/2025 01:28

I love Primrose, Pearl, and Emerald. Also Daphne!
Esme.is lovely ('Esmay')

Maeve, though lovely, is very popular.

Not keen on Keira.

I really dislike Scarlet.

LeftFooter · 02/12/2025 00:06

If you like the Esmee pronunciation, the name can also be spelt like that.

Pearl and Maeve are my favourites from your list.

Beryl is also a gemstone name 😀

Primrose lovely
Pearl lovely
Keira dated
Emerald (maybe too unusual?) although we like Emmy lovely
Maeve ok too popular
Esme don’t like that it is said two ways
Scarlet nice

Emerald or Primrose would be my choice.

Me too: Primrose or Emerald.

4thbabynamehelp · 01/12/2025 23:52

I've just realised the May birth stone is also Emerald and this is a May baby.

Emerald is nudging up, I thought you'd all think it was a bit crazy! I've never met one. I love how it shortens to Emmy which is a safe option if she prefers it to Emerald.

Primrose - Love
Pearl - Love
Keira -
Emerald (maybe too unusual?) although we like Emmy
Maeve
Esme
Scarlet

24Dogcuddler · 01/12/2025 23:28

Emerald and Esme are both beautiful names.
I also like Erin and Orla.

Larymarylary · 01/12/2025 23:03

Scarlett is lovely ❤️

miniaturepixieonacid · 01/12/2025 23:02

Primrose - quite like it. Unusual and pretty. Never met one. Would want 'Prim' though.
Pearl - really don't like it but I don't know why. Seems old lady-ish but so many names are these days and I like lots of them so not sure what it is about Pearl.
Keira - really like it. I don't think it's dated, particularly. I teach one who is 7.
Emerald - quite like it. Never met one. Less keen on Emmy.
Maeve - not keen. Don't think it has a pretty sound.
Esme - cute. Like it.
Scarlet - when it's a name rather than a colour it has two ts on the end. Quite like it.
Daphne - this has grown on me a lot recently. Old lady-ish but I do really like it.

I think I'd choose Keira from your list. Followed by Daphne.

Jamclag · 01/12/2025 22:56

Emerald is lovely - sounds like the Irish connection fits well with your family too. And the nickname Emmy is very sweet.

4thbabynamehelp · 01/12/2025 22:49

Thanks for the opinions so far. I can see why Keira seems dated. It actually came from me looking for an Irish girls name and I liked Ciara which is pronounced the same way, but I've got a Cillian who gets pronounced incorrectly a lot, and whilst I love his name I dont want another name that keeps causing those issues, so considered Keira.
My DH isnt keen on 'prim' either. He would probably choose Daphne out of all my choices.
Esme I am concerned with pronunciation again... I like both ways but feel it would be said wrong half of the time.
Theres something about Scarlett that I keep coming back to as well, even though I don't want her being called Scar.

I really like Esme, Maeve and Keira.

Pearl, Emmy and Scarlet are quite nice too.

Primrose - I’m not keen on the “prim” bit. Emerald I’d use as a middle name - it’s a bit out there for me.

I’d pick Esme 😊

Mumofgirls2017 · 01/12/2025 17:49

Love primrose nn posie, pearl. I also like maeve and emerald nn Emmy though agree a bit out there.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 01/12/2025 17:48

I'd pick Daphne.

ginasevern · 01/12/2025 17:22

Just not Keira, it's so, so dated and Scarlett has been done to death too. I like Emerald the best, especially given the Irish connection.

WildCherryBlossom · 01/12/2025 17:21

I really like Emerald, particularly with its significance to you. I have met an Emerald. It’s unusual but not completely unheard of as a name.

dnadiscoveryquery · 01/12/2025 17:15

I met a little Margo last week. It was adorable on her!

I also like Callie as pp suggested above.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 01/12/2025 17:11

Daphne !!! I love this name or Pearl

I knew an Emme full name Emmeline if you like Emmy but aren’t sold on Emerald

user2848502016 · 01/12/2025 17:05

I love Primrose or Emerald

ScruffMuffin · 01/12/2025 17:03

Emerald and Scarlett are great! Not keen on the others, sorry.
