I work with a Noura and she’s a lovely person, but a lovely selection of names to choose from.

LemonLeaves · 10/12/2025 04:30

One of my favourite girl's names is Nelufar. It's so pretty.

Yorkshirelass21 · 29/11/2025 17:13

Iman or Amir. My great grandfather was called Abdulla. So many beautiful names, it’s hard to choose!

BeNoisyFish · 29/11/2025 15:37

Any name can be taken the piss off, you have to draw the word association line somewhere.

MirandaBlu · 29/11/2025 14:38

I think of Alanna (or Alannah, Alana) as Scottish - common feminine version of the classic Alan! But I love it. Also love Nadia, really like Samara. If you're living in an English-speaking country, these ones - and also Sofia, Fatima, and Yasmin - are pretty trouble-free in terms of pronunciation.

I like Khalid, Musa, Yusuf for boys - and Farook, although spelling could be confusing in English (Faruq, Farouk, etc.)

Musa is pronounced differently to mowza (arabic for banana)

@BeNoisyFish , the genus of banana isn't mowza.

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 29/11/2025 14:29

Both spellings of Haroun are lovely.
Every Haroun I’ve ever taught has always had a really lovely way about them.
And I loved the book Haroun and the Sea of Stories, so I am biased.

'Rami' for a Boy ( it means 'The Marksman' , 'One who is Focused, Determined' (Plus i love Rami Malek) and 'Yasmeen' for a girl, love that name !!

Didntask · 29/11/2025 12:42

Omar or Adam for a boy
Khadija or Maryam for a girl. Special mention for Jamila - I had a friend at school called Jamila, I adored her.

I really like Haroon, Khusaima and Abuza for boys.
Zainab and Hadiya for a girl.

Ahhh, Haroon is really lovely. And how about the spelling Haroun is nice.also.

I like all of them apart from Nadia. I don't know what it us about it!

I especially like Musa, but that might just be because I've known a few that were (and I hope still are!) all just really lovely boys 😂. When you work with children it really influences opinions on names!

Yeah, miss is really nice.

@Judgejudysno1fan , the Latin or botanical name for the genus a banana belongs to is Musa. and I know the name Musa is the equivalent of Moses.

Why is it cheeky to point out that a name might get mispronounced?

Judgejudysno1fan · 29/11/2025 12:07

My top choices for boys are Quasim/Kaseem and Khalid which hubby likes too!

My favourite for girls are Sulayka and Maimoona

Just added 3 more to the girls list now though.

Anissa
Malika
Sumayyah

I'm very nice. I'd get fed up with all the Khalid variations, they annoy me without them being my child's name, and my dear friend Musa calls himself Banana.

I mean, he says 'I'm Khalid' and the people who hear him say it, repeat it as Kar-leed, Kar-lid, Har-leed, Hal-id... Why?

Edited

I dont see the similarity between Musa and Banana regardless if your friend calls himself that. I dont see the name Musa/moses and associate it with fruit.

You might be very nice indeed. But to me, Your post come across cheeky and sarcastic. Apologies if you were not, but thats how I read it.

Are you muslim?

Sofia is lovely but it is very, very common now. One of my daughter’s has about five in her year.
Khalisa and Samara are soooo beautiful sounding and not overused.

I really love Samara too.

Khalisa (car lisa) - not with that pronunciation. Kh isn't a C sound.
Khalid will get mangled - Car-lead, Har-lead, Kal-id...
(non-rhotic Rs)

Habiba is too much
Musa - banana

You sound nice.
