Mid-Century & Onwards Names in the Wild

I know a lot of early 20th century names have become popular but for my own curiosity, I was wondering if anyone had come across any mid-century-onwards named children recently. For boys, think Richard, Paul, John, Stephen, Matthew, Mark, Simon, Peter etc and for girls, Susan, Deborah, Katherine, Helen, Georgina, Natalie, Rachel, Joanna etc. Basically, names more seemingly tied to the 1960s-1990s.

(if DD was boy, Peter would have been my no 1 choice, Robert would have been no 2)

@theunbreakablecleopatrajones I really wanted Peter for DS! But DH said with our last name he pictured a middle aged geography teacher. He's got another biblical name instead. I also liked Susanna for DD but he wouldn't go for that either.

VikaOlson · 28/11/2025 21:18

I know a Kimberley who's about 6, a Linda and Judy about 5, a 4 year old Rita and a toddler Bernard and baby Richard.

Calliopespa · 28/11/2025 20:43

Some of these are awful.😕

Mine are teens now and I don’t have much to do with babies but I LOVE these names! I would have loved twins called Jenny and Peter.

Peachbubble · 24/11/2025 22:07

I met baby a Susan the other day.

I know of a Melissa, Dawn and Desmond.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 23/11/2025 09:16

Not yet but I know baby Jennifers, Penelopes, Junes, Jeans, Matthews, a Patrick, a Barbara, a Patricia and a Sarah, so I'd say the mid century revival is on its way - but the Peters and Susans will probably have to bed in for a good while before we get to the Melanie and Adrian stage

Newsenmum · 22/11/2025 19:07

We’re not quite there (yet!) as those names are the grandparents of current children and not grandparents of child-bearing adults.

tangobravo · 22/11/2025 19:05

I've come across two baby John's and a Jonathan in the last couple of weeks!

Firebird83 · 22/11/2025 18:47

I know toddlers called Carol and Helen.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 16/11/2025 12:18

I would like Joy and Angela to come back, I prefer them to Grace which is much more common now.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 16/11/2025 12:17

Brothers Percy, Stephen and Dennis.

LincolnLawyer12 · 16/11/2025 07:12

I know a Ray, Paul, John, Jennifer (all primary age) and a preschool Michael and Matthew.

I'm a midwife and have delivered in the last few years John, Stephen, Matthew, Brian (more popular with Chinese families), Simon, Peter, David, Eric, Ronnie, Ray, Ernie, Daniel ....no Keiths, Gary's or Kevins that I recall. I know a suzy, have delivered Katherine, Helen, Georgina, Natalie, Rachel, Rebecca, Jessica, Mary....most of the names mentioned and those are just the ones that come to mind reading the names. Am sure I will have forgotten quite a few. You get a flurry of popularity with a few names and then everything else comes along just less often. I love hearing people's name choices and their stories around them.

Zuve · 15/11/2025 06:37

Stephen, Richard more popular again. I know a Margaret as well all under school age

Mobley52 · 15/11/2025 06:30

I know a young Kimberley, Marian and David

roshi42 · 14/11/2025 21:04

I was watching a vintage (90s I guess) animated episode of Spot on YouTube with my toddler and the monkey was called Steve - I genuinely laughed out loud. Perfectly normal name but just so wildly unlike anything you hear relating to kids these days!

cobrakaieaglefang · 14/11/2025 20:46

I've come across a Colin and a Ray, both under 10.
