Would you pronounce it:

  1. Sa - me - ra
  2. Sa - my - ra

Sa meer ah

This. Pretty name.

SemperIdem · 03/12/2025 13:26

I’ve known a few Samira’s, all pronounced like option 1. The Samir’s I’ve met have been like option 1 too, just without the last syllable. It’s a very straightforward name!

You’re going to have to correct the staff who are mispronouncing your daughters name, can be done nicely of course but what they’re calling her is not her name.

Pryceosh1987 · 03/12/2025 02:04

Sa meer rah.

Calliopespa · 02/12/2025 23:46

TheCurious0range · 10/11/2025 23:50

Sa meer ah

That is what would have thought too.

WoahThreeAces · 02/12/2025 16:57

Sah MEER uh
Kind of rhymes with Shakira

Kumquatzest · 02/12/2025 16:51

I've only heard (1).

I'd guess (2) would be spelt Samaira or something like that.

Edelweiss129 · 28/11/2025 12:40

It's actually some-mee-raa

Emanwenym · 12/11/2025 10:40

The -ira rhymes with Vera, ee-rah.

@Justaminuteplease , if you look at how many of the pp have written how they say it, I'm not surprised.

A friend has a Gina, good job she didn't go to your nursery.Smile

Nice name BTW. I know some Saminas and a Samia but they are about my age.

Justaminuteplease · 12/11/2025 10:13

Thanks everyone!

@jdm625 I was asking as my daughter is called Samira, and we pronounce it as number 1 (although any of the ee pronunciations would be fine), but at nursery all the teachers pronounce it sa-my-ra, which is strange (they also can't seem to pronounce it right even with correction from us).

We love the name, and one of the reasons we picked it was because we thought it would be fairly easy to pronounce - so I'm glad others here pronounce it as we intended.

It's the feminine form of Samir. (Sah-meer, 2 syllables). Currently in the news, but I was a bit puzzled as to who 'Sam-ee-uh Shah' was.

Samira as in Meerkat.
Samira the Meerkat

RuthW · 11/11/2025 14:57

Sam- ear- a

Ellanory · 11/11/2025 13:48

The only one I know pronounces it Sa-my-ra

JDM625 · 11/11/2025 13:44

OP- why do you ask?

I've personally never heard it pronounced as No2. I also lived in the middle east for several years and always heard it as No1.

GoodBones85 · 11/11/2025 13:09

However the person whose name it was asked me to pronounce it??

goingtotown · 11/11/2025 13:04

Sam ear ra

itsthetea · 11/11/2025 12:54

Sam ear a

Emanwenym · 11/11/2025 12:53

I say meer and ear as two syllables. Samira is 3 syllables not 4.

eurochick · 11/11/2025 12:32

I went to school with one and that is how she said it.

TheJessops · 11/11/2025 12:30

Emanwenym · 11/11/2025 11:33

Sam-EE-rah
