Angus or Milo

Otto would be lovely with a different surname. Inevitably he would be called Otto Scotto.

Love Angus, and Ivo reminds me of that little Scottish twin in Child of Our Time who is utterly lovely but looks like VERY hard work for his poor mum.

I have a Milo, pre Tweenies (imagine how I felt when they named them). He is not teased and there are hardly any other ones about (he is 12 and my youngest). Older two have very 'sensible' names so I am really glad I took the plunge and gave him a more unusual name (I know its quite popular now, but wasn't then). Someone did buy him a tin of 'Milo' drink once as a joke (its a milky drink like Ovaltine!!) but he really didnt mind. He quite likes it (the drink and the name....).

Barnaby is nice. I think Gilbert Scott was a naturalist. Hubert is quite unusual.

As for Mabel, why not Amabel? It might sound madey-uppy, but it's actually old and Latin.

F&Z I am with you, I don't even think these names are particularly unusual, just not 'fashionable' at the moment. Gil is very cool.

as for this thread, don't people get a bit scaredycat about something slightly unusual? Your names are not particularly outre I wouldn't have said

Hubert reminds me of Pubert, the baby in the Adams Family movies.
Hugh is fine though.
Herbert is spotty.
All others OK. Gilbert is unusual because unfashionable, but nothing wrong with that, and Gil is a cool short form.

We have a Barnaby. It really suits him, rarely meet another. Noone raises an eyebrow (at least not to our faces ) My only complaint is that it is quite long when you are yelling for him in the park

I have an Angus so I'm biased.

Everyone always says "what a lovely name" although I do cringe slightly when I walk past those Burger King promotions!

Names like Gilbert/Hubert/Herbet/Cuthbert are not going to be the best names when he gets older, but something more like Robert he can tailor to how he wants to be known when grown up.

odd reactions on this thread 'inflict' is a bit strong and 'consider secondary school'

ime my secondary school aged kids know children with bizarre names and love it! it is a misnoma all this poor them they will be bullied - this is not the 70;s

I think we've got different tastes in names! I know an Otto, but he always makes me think of the Fish out of Water story. Milo makes me think of the Tweenies. Sounds like you really want a Bertie so why not Albert too?

Ernest --- Ernie Wise, Ernie the milkman, Ern/Urn.

Angus will be shortened to Gus/Gussie---makes me think of 'gusset'

Gilbert--- shortened to Gil/Gillie so more like a girl's name

Hubert---wasn't he the wimp in the 'Just William' books?

better ways to search for names than top 2000 because they also include cultural or family names etc.

I would just look through books/sites.

But if that's the kind of thing you like I think you should eb asking...

Personally I think the ones you've selected could be improved. Consider other kids at secondary school, him at work etc.

But hold on if your ttc does that mean your decided about girls name just not sure about boys?

I like Hector, but it wouldn't be on my list iyswim. I would look further than the top 2000 names tbh.

I like Hector and Raffa but only when messing about on a baby names thread. Would inflict none of your list on a real-life baby.

Like: Gilbert and Milo; also Raphael but don't think it goes with Scott.

Not fussed: Arlo, Otto, Angus, Ivo; Barnaby is okay but I dislike the two I know!

Don't like: Hubert, Herbet, Ernest, Hector.
